Historical Record
Historical records concerning Tian Zhang are exceedingly sparse; in the surviving official histories such as the *Records of the Three Kingdoms*, no biography or record of deeds of a figure named "Tian Zhang" can be found. This means that in the true picture of history, Tian Zhang may have been an obscure minor figure, or his deeds went unrecorded by the historians, or his name was corrupted in the course of transmission. Therefore, we cannot obtain from the historical materials any definite information about Tian Zhang's life, official posts, achievements, or the role he played during the Three Kingdoms period.
In the Novel
In the great literary work *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, Tian Zhang is likewise a character who scarcely appears. According to the materials provided, Tian Zhang appears in the novel only in Chapter 116, mentioned in just that one chapter. Such an extremely low frequency and brevity of appearance suggest that Tian Zhang is not a core figure in the novel's plot—perhaps even merely a fleeting background character whose presence serves more to advance a particular plot point than to possess an independent character arc. Owing to the lack of specific narrative description, we cannot elaborate in detail on Tian Zhang's specific words and deeds in the novel, his faction, which major figures he interacted with, or how he influenced the course of the story. It may be inferred that Tian Zhang's role in the novel is negligible, his image left undeveloped, forming a sharp contrast with the familiar heroes and champions of the Three Kingdoms. This situation of being "unrecorded in history" and "scarcely recorded in the novel" renders Tian Zhang a figure indistinct in both the historical and the literary context.
Key Relationships
Since neither the historical nor the novelistic materials provide detailed information about Tian Zhang, we cannot establish any key relationships between Tian Zhang and other figures. Whether kinship, lord-subordinate ties, comradeship, or enmity, none can be verified from the existing records. In *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, even a character who appears only once may have had a brief intersection with some major figure, but for Tian Zhang even such a clue is wholly absent. Therefore, in both the historical and literary narratives, Tian Zhang presents an isolated state, having failed to establish any relationship worth mentioning with any other figure.
Signature Scenes
Given that the historical materials contain no record whatsoever of Tian Zhang, and that in the novel he appears only once in Chapter 116 with the briefest of mentions, we cannot depict any signature scene for Tian Zhang. A figure's signature scene is usually the concentrated embodiment of his character, ability, or fate, often accompanied by an important historical event or dramatic conflict. However, Tian Zhang left, in both history and the novel, no event or image sufficient to constitute anything "signature." He took part in no famous battle, delivered no resounding pronouncement, and underwent no gripping personal experience. Therefore, on both the historical and the literary stage, Tian Zhang left no unique moment that could be remembered by later generations.
