Historical Record
Pan Zhang, styled Wengui, was a native of Fagan in Dong Commandery. His life was closely bound up with Sun Quan. When Sun Quan was magistrate of Yangxian County, Pan Zhang went to follow him. The histories record that he was bold and unrestrained by nature, fond of drink, and though his household was poor he liked to buy on credit; when creditors came to his door, he often said that once he became rich and honored he would surely repay. Sun Quan thought highly of him and was fond of him, so he had him recruit soldiers; Pan Zhang successfully recruited more than a hundred men and thereby became a commander.
Pan Zhang performed outstandingly in subduing mountain bandits, won merit, and was appointed a Separate Division Major. Later he served as Inspector of Crime at the Great Market of Wu Commandery; under his governance bandits vanished and his fame rose, and he was then promoted to magistrate of Xi'an County in Yuzhang. At that time Liu Biao held Jing Province, and the local people were often harassed by raiders, but after Pan Zhang took office the raiders dared not cross the border. When a bandit revolt broke out in Jianchang County, Pan Zhang was transferred to Jianchang and additionally enfeoffed as Colonel of Fierce Valor; in a mere ten days he pacified the rebellion, gathered the scattered people, formed a force of eight hundred men, and brought them back to Jianye.
In military confrontations with Cao Wei, Pan Zhang likewise displayed his military talent. When the Wei general Xiahou Shang and others besieged Nan Commandery, they divided off thirty thousand troops, built a pontoon bridge, and crossed to Bailizhou. Zhuge Jin, Yang Can, and others led troops to the rescue but did not know how to respond, while the Wei army crossed the river ceaselessly day after day. Pan Zhang assessed the situation, judging that "the Wei force is at the peak of its strength, and the river water is shallow; we cannot yet give battle." He led his men fifty li upstream to cut several million bundles of reeds, bound them into huge rafts, and planned to send them downstream and set them afire to burn the pontoon bridge. The rafts had just been made and were awaiting a rise in the water level when Xiahou Shang withdrew his troops. Pan Zhang then set up defenses at Lukou. After Sun Quan proclaimed himself emperor, Pan Zhang was appointed General of the Right. In addition, Pan Zhang once captured Guan Yu at Linju together with Zhu Ran, and for this was promoted to General Who Manifests Valor and enfeoffed as Marquis of Xi'an Village.
In the Novel
In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Pan Zhang's image is further developed, and he takes part in more important historical events. He first appears against the backdrop of Sun Quan widely recruiting worthy men, listed together with Lü Meng, Lu Xun, Xu Sheng, Ding Feng, and others as fine generals of the Southland. This accords with the historical account that he followed Sun Quan early on and was promoted for merit, but the Romance places him in the context of Sun Quan's recruitment of talent after succeeding to power, more strongly emphasizing his standing as an important general of the Southland.
Pan Zhang plays a role in the military deployments on the eve of the Battle of Red Cliffs, appointed by Zhou Yu as commander of the third unit, paired with Ling Tong and charged with a combined advance by land and water. In the stratagem against Cao Ren's raid on the camp, Pan Zhang charged out from the west together with Zhou Tai and routed the Cao troops, displaying his valor. At the Battle of Ruxukou, Pan Zhang charged out from the left together with Chen Wu and, with generals such as Han Dang and Zhou Tai, jointly resisted Cao Cao's assault, forcing Cao Cao to withdraw his troops. These episodes are not recorded in detail in the histories and are literary inventions by the Romance to enrich the character and the plot.
The Romance's account of Pan Zhang capturing Guan Yu is especially detailed and dramatic. Under Lü Meng's stratagem, Pan Zhang was placed in ambush on a remote mountain path at Linju, and his subordinate general Ma Zhong ultimately captured Guan Yu alive. This episode is depicted in the Romance with great suspense: in the course of breaking out of the encirclement, Guan Yu first met the pursuit of Zhu Ran, then ran into Pan Zhang's ambush, and was finally captured when his mount was tripped. Although Pan Zhang did indeed take part in the capture of Guan Yu in the histories, the Romance concretizes the process and highlights the role of Pan Zhang and his subordinate in this event. At the Battle of Xiaoting, Pan Zhang was appointed vanguard by Sun Quan and, with generals such as Han Dang and Zhou Tai, resisted Liu Bei's assault. This appointment also reflects his important standing in the Eastern Wu military system.
