Historical Record
Historical records of Hou Xuan are exceedingly scarce; the official histories, such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms, scarcely mention this man's deeds or life at all. This means that in the true picture of history, Hou Xuan was not an important historical figure, his activities going unrecorded by the official sources. It is therefore impossible to give an objective account of his life based on the biographical material.
In the Novel
Hou Xuan appears in Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Chapters 58 and 59, two chapters in all. He is portrayed as one of the generals under Ma Chao, who, together with Ma Chao, took part in the Battle of Tong Pass against Cao Cao. In the novel, Hou Xuan's image is not prominent; he exists mainly as a subordinate of Ma Chao, his personal character and military ability not deeply depicted. He, together with Ma Chao, Han Sui, and the other lords of Xiliang, opposed Cao Cao, but his specific exploits and contributions receive little ink in the novel. The novel's portrayal of Hou Xuan serves more to set off Ma Chao's valor and Cao Cao's cunning than to display any independent value of his own as a character. The histories give no clear account of any deed of Hou Xuan, so the descriptions in the novel belong entirely to literary creation and narrative need.
Key Relationships
Hou Xuan's most important relationship in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is his subordinate-to-superior relationship with Ma Chao (unique to the novel). As a general under Ma Chao, he loyally followed Ma Chao in taking part in the Battle of Tong Pass, jointly opposing Cao Cao's army. This relationship is the basis of his presence in the novel and the starting point of all his actions. In addition, he stood in an allied, shoulder-to-shoulder relationship with Han Sui and the other lords of Xiliang, jointly forming the anti-Cao alliance (unique to the novel). These relationships, however, are largely functional, serving the novel's overall narrative rather than displaying any deep personal ties or influence of Hou Xuan.
Signature Scenes
Hou Xuan has no particularly prominent signature scene in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms; his appearances are concentrated during the Battle of Tong Pass, where he takes part in military action as a member of Ma Chao's camp. For instance, he may appear on the battlefield in the standoff between Ma Chao and Cao Cao's army, or as a listener present at military councils. The novel, however, gives him no independent, decisive battle or strategic display. He is more a background figure, his presence serving to fill out the roster of generals in Ma Chao's camp and to provide the necessary character support for the unfolding of the overall campaign. Since the histories contain no record of Hou Xuan, all of these scenes belong to literary creation unique to the novel.
