Historical Record

Concerning Yang Qiu, the Records of the Three Kingdoms and other official histories contain no clear biography or detailed account of his deeds. It is therefore impossible to construct his life from the historical materials. Yang Qiu's true face in history is more that of a general under the Liang Province warlord Han Sui, mentioned in a few historical events, but his specific contributions, character, or personal experiences are all beyond verification from the sources.

In the Novel

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yang Qiu, as one of the five leading generals under Han Sui, is given greater literary color and plot-driving function. He first appears in the Battle of Tong Pass between Ma Chao and Cao Cao, assisting Han Sui together with Hou Xuan, Li Kan, Liang Xing, Ma Wan, and other generals. The Yang Qiu of the novel shows a degree of strategy and judgment of the situation, especially at the critical moment when relations between Han Sui and Ma Chao broke down, where he played an important role. When Cao Cao used a stratagem to sow discord, making Ma Chao suspicious of Han Sui and wishing to harm him, Yang Qiu and the other four generals together restrained Ma Chao and persuaded him to return to camp.

Subsequently, when Han Sui and the five generals deliberated on how to deal with Ma Chao's suspicions, Yang Qiu clearly proposed surrendering to Cao Cao. He held that Ma Chao relied too heavily on his valor, and that even if they defeated Cao Cao, it would be hard to coexist peacefully with Han Sui; better to submit secretly to Cao Cao to seek the rank of marquis. Although Han Sui at first hesitated out of his brotherly bond with Ma Teng, Yang Qiu insisted that "matters have come to this; there is no choice" and volunteered to go to Cao's camp to convey the surrender. He went to Cao Cao bearing Han Sui's secret letter and successfully reached a surrender agreement with Cao Cao, who promised to enfeoff Han Sui as Marquis of Xiliang and Yang Qiu as Administrator of Xiliang, and agreed to use a fire signal to coordinate an inside-and-outside attack against Ma Chao. After Yang Qiu returned, he reported the agreement with Cao Cao to Han Sui in detail, so that Han Sui was greatly pleased and began planning to set a banquet to lure and kill Ma Chao. This series of episodes makes Yang Qiu a key figure within Han Sui's faction who defected to Cao Cao; his actions directly hastened the complete rupture between Han Sui and Ma Chao and ultimately brought about Ma Chao's defeat.

Key Relationships

* Han Sui: Yang Qiu was an important general under Han Sui; in Romance of the Three Kingdoms he was not only Han Sui's military aide but also his political advisor. When relations between Han Sui and Ma Chao grew tense, Yang Qiu actively offered Han Sui counsel, advising him to surrender to Cao Cao, and personally went to Cao's camp to convey the message, bringing about the secret alliance between Han Sui and Cao Cao. This relationship ultimately evolved into Yang Qiu being Han Sui's advisor and executor, with profound influence over Han Sui's decisions.
* Cao Wei: In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yang Qiu ultimately chose to defect to Cao Cao, becoming a member of the Cao Wei camp. As Han Sui's envoy, he reached a surrender agreement with Cao Cao and obtained the post of Administrator of Xiliang promised by Cao Cao. His defection was an important link in the success of Cao Cao's discord stratagem and laid the foundation for Cao Cao's eventual defeat of Ma Chao.
* Ma Chao: Yang Qiu's relationship with Ma Chao was full of opposition and conflict. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yang Qiu held that Ma Chao "relied on his valor and constantly harbored a mind to bully his lord", and actively pushed Han Sui to abandon Ma Chao and turn to Cao Cao. His actions directly brought about Ma Chao's defeat; the two were therefore in a hostile relationship. (Novel-only)
