Historical Record

Historical records concerning Yang Song are extremely scant; in the Records of the Three Kingdoms and other official histories there is no clear biography or detailed account of his deeds. This indicates that Yang Song was not an important historical figure of the Three Kingdoms period, and his actual influence in history may have been very limited—indeed, in the official histories Yang Song is almost a case of "no such person on record." We therefore cannot construct from the historical materials his life, offices, character, or specific deeds. His existence is embodied more in the shaping of literary works than in the true record of history.

In the Novel

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yang Song is portrayed as an advisor under Zhang Lu, Administrator of Hanzhong, his image vivid and highly colored by literature. The trait of being "extremely greedy for bribes" runs through his entire characterization, making him an important role in driving the plot forward. Yang Song first appears in chapter sixty-four and plays a key part in chapters sixty-five and sixty-seven. Exploiting Zhang Lu's misgivings about Liu Bei, he accepted bribes of gold and pearls from Liu Bei's envoy Sun Qian and advised Zhang Lu, prompting him to consider an alliance with Liu Bei to jointly oppose Cao Cao. Although this ultimately failed, it displayed Yang Song's avaricious nature and his influence within Zhang Lu's faction.

Subsequently, after Ma Chao submitted to Zhang Lu, Yang Song played the role of sowing discord between Ma Chao and Zhang Lu. When Ma Chao's attack on Xichuan made little progress, Yang Song spread rumors falsely accusing Ma Chao of intending to seize Xichuan, set himself up as lord of Shu, and avenge his father, and of being unwilling to submit to Hanzhong. This scheme made Zhang Lu suspicious of Ma Chao and led him to take measures restricting Ma Chao's movements, ultimately leaving Ma Chao disheartened and turning to Liu Bei. This act of Yang Song's not only hastened Ma Chao's departure but also indirectly weakened Zhang Lu's military strength.

When Cao Cao attacked Hanzhong, Yang Song's greed and treachery reached their peak. He secretly accepted bribes from Cao Cao and became Cao Cao's inside agent. He falsely accused Pang De of taking bribes from Cao Cao, leading to Pang De being rebuked by Zhang Lu and nearly executed. As Hanzhong was about to fall, Yang Song further strongly advocated opening the gates and surrendering to Cao Cao, reported Zhang Lu's movements secretly to Cao Cao, and even after Zhang Lu retreated to Bazhong, continued to serve as Cao Cao's spy, advising Cao Cao to advance and offering himself as an inside agent. In the end, Yang Song's betrayal brought about Zhang Lu's complete defeat and the change of master in Hanzhong. Yet his own end was quite ironic: after pacifying Hanzhong, Cao Cao beheaded him for the crimes of fickleness and greedy betrayal of his master—truly, "scheming too cleverly, he ruined his own life."
