Historical Record
Pang Hong, courtesy name Jushi, was the son of Pang Tong, a notable man of Shu Han in the Three Kingdoms period. The sources record his life rather briefly, focusing mainly on his character and his official career. He was firm and resolute, plain and simple, and dared to pass judgment on others, with a markedly distinct personality. This character, however, also led to setbacks in his official life. He once slighted Chen Zhi, the Director of the Masters of Writing, and was consequently suppressed by Chen Zhi. In the end, Pang Hong's career came to a halt at the post of Grand Administrator of Fuling, where he died in office. His father Pang Tong was struck by a stray arrow and died while assaulting the city of Luo, at the age of only thirty-six; the Former Sovereign Liu Bei grieved deeply over this, even to the point of tears. Liu Bei not only posthumously enfeoffed Pang Tong as Marquis Within the Passes with the posthumous title Marquis Jing, but also appointed Pang Tong's father a Gentleman Consultant, later promoting him to Grand Master of Remonstrance, and Zhuge Liang himself performed the rite of obeisance to Pang Tong's father. Pang Hong's uncle Pang Lin suffered military defeat while accompanying Huang Quan on campaign against Wu, surrendered to Wei together with Huang Quan, and was later enfeoffed by Wei as a full marquis, rising to Grand Administrator of Julu.
In the Novel
Romance of the Three Kingdoms gives no detailed literary treatment of Pang Hong; indeed, it scarcely mentions any of his deeds at all. The novel's ink is lavished mainly on the wisdom and tragic end of Pang Tong, the "Fledgling Phoenix," with little written of his descendants. In the novel, therefore, the image of Pang Hong is absent: his firm, simple character with its readiness to pass judgment, his conflict with Chen Zhi, and his eventual tenure as Grand Administrator of Fuling all fail to appear in the story. This stands in contrast to the brief record of Pang Hong in the sources and leaves him with virtually no presence in the minds of the novel's readers.
Key Relationships
* Pang Tong (kin_of): Pang Hong was the son of Pang Tong. As an important strategist of Shu Han, Pang Tong was renowned together with Zhuge Liang as "the Crouching Dragon and the Fledgling Phoenix," and his early death grieved Liu Bei deeply. Pang Tong's eminent standing and tragic fate undoubtedly added a halo to Pang Hong's family background. The sources, however, do not record whether Pang Hong inherited his father's strategic gifts or talent, emphasizing instead his personal character.
* Chen Zhi (rival_of): There was clear antagonism between Pang Hong and Chen Zhi, the Director of the Masters of Writing. By his firm, simple character and his readiness to pass judgment on others, Pang Hong showed disdain for Chen Zhi and was as a result suppressed by him. This directly affected the development of Pang Hong's career, leaving him unable to attain higher office. This relationship reveals Pang Hong's lack of smoothness in officialdom and the possible power struggles and complex interpersonal relations within Shu Han at the time.
Iconic Scene
* Slighting Chen Zhi and having his career blocked: Pang Hong's most iconic scene is undoubtedly that in which, by his "firm, simple, judgment-passing" character, he slighted Chen Zhi, then Director of the Masters of Writing, and was consequently suppressed by him. This directly led to the frustration of Pang Hong's career, so that he served only as Grand Administrator of Fuling before he died. Although this scene has no specific dialogue or action described, the few words of the sources sketch out Pang Hong's blunt, somewhat untimely personality, and his persistence and helplessness in the face of power. It displays not only Pang Hong's personal character but also reflects indirectly certain aspects of the later Shu Han officialdom—namely the conflict between personal character and power structures. This scene appears only in historical biography and is not mentioned in the novel.
