Yang Wei, courtesy name Shiying, was from Fengyi and served as a military aide to Cao Shuang of Cao Wei; he does not appear in the novel.
Deeds
When Emperor Ming was building palaces, Yang Wei once remonstrated that felling the pines and cypresses on tombs and destroying stone monuments and pillars would hurt the dead and wound the hearts of filial sons, and should not be made a precedent for later generations. (Recorded in historical sources)
In the fifth year of Zhengshi, Cao Shuang led an army through Luo Valley to attack Shu, but the troops were held up. Yang Wei explained the situation to Cao Shuang and urged him to withdraw as soon as possible. He also argued with Deng Yang in Cao Shuang’s presence, saying that Deng Yang and Li Sheng would ruin the country’s affairs and should both be executed. Cao Shuang was displeased and ultimately led the army back. (Recorded in historical sources)
He once served as a Gentleman of the Secretariat and, by imperial command, joined Gaotang Long and Luo Lu in checking the calendar. Yang Wei and Luo Lu represented the Grand Astrologer’s Office, while Gaotang Long relied on the old calendar. For several years, the two sides submitted mutual accusations and reports. Yang Wei claimed that Luo Lu’s calendar predicted solar eclipses but not the complete obscuration of the moon, whereas Gaotang Long’s calendar predicted no solar eclipses but did predict the moon’s complete obscuration. The imperial edict ultimately adopted the Grand Astrologer’s Office’s position. (Recorded in historical sources)
