Historical Record

Tian Kai was a figure of the late Eastern Han who served Gongsun Zan. He played an important role in the military confrontation between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao. During the campaigns against Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan appointed Tian Kai as Inspector of Qing Province c:5981. This appointment indicates that Tian Kai held a position of considerable standing and military command within Gongsun Zan's faction, responsible for the military and administrative affairs of a region. In the early clashes between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao, Gongsun Zan "raised troops and gave battle to Yuan Shao, and Yuan Shao did not prevail," and seizing the momentum "made Yan Gang Inspector of Jizhou, Tian Kai of Qing Province, and Dan Jing of Yanzhou, setting up officials over the various commanderies and counties" c:5981. This reflects that Gongsun Zan once held the upper hand and sought to consolidate his sphere of power in the Hebei region by installing his own inspectors. However, Yuan Shao dispatched his great general Qu Yi's vanguard to engage Gongsun Zan, ultimately driving Gongsun Zan's army back in defeat to Bohai c:5981.

In addition, the historical record notes that early in his career Liu Bei, having been routed by bandits, turned to take refuge with the General of the Household Gongsun Zan. Gongsun Zan thought highly of Liu Bei, memorialized to make him an Adjutant of a Detached Division, and sent him together with the Inspector of Qing Province Tian Kai to resist the Governor of Jizhou, Yuan Shao c:3260. In the course of resisting Yuan Shao together with Tian Kai, Liu Bei "repeatedly achieved military merits," and was therefore made acting Magistrate of Pingyuan, and later Chancellor of Pingyuan c:3260. This shows that Tian Kai was not only a senior general under Gongsun Zan but also an important partner in Liu Bei's early military career. His collaboration with Liu Bei in jointly resisting Yuan Shao's military pressure helped Liu Bei accumulate early military experience and political capital.

In the Novel

*Romance of the Three Kingdoms* does not directly mention the figure of Tian Kai, and so his literary portrayal is absent from the novel. The novel depicts the war between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao, as well as Liu Bei's early refuge with Gongsun Zan, but does not present Tian Kai as an independent character or important supporting figure. The historical record of Tian Kai serving as Inspector of Qing Province and jointly resisting Yuan Shao with Liu Bei is simplified in the novel or replaced by the storylines of other characters. Thus, within the novel's narrative framework, Tian Kai's image and deeds are a blank—a sharp contrast to the histories' record of him as a subordinate general of Gongsun Zan, Inspector of Qing Province, and an early comrade-in-arms of Liu Bei.
