Historical Record

Regarding Xiahou Cun, neither the orthodox history Records of the Three Kingdoms nor its related sources contain any clear record. Xiahou Cun is therefore not a real historical figure; his life and deeds are entirely fictional, a creation of literature.

In the Novel

In the literary world of Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xiahou Cun, as a valiant general under Cao Ren, appears in Chapter 73, his image shaped as a brave but somewhat reckless general who underestimated the enemy. When Guan Yu led his army to attack Fancheng, Cao Ren had intended to hold firm and not go out, but the deputy general Zhai Yuan and the adviser Man Chong held differing views. Man Chong, well aware that Guan Yu was endowed with both valor and strategy, strongly urged holding firm, while Xiahou Cun thought little of this, regarding Man Chong's words as "a scholar's talk" and boasting, "When water comes, earth dams it; when the general arrives, troops meet him," advocating an active sally to engage Guan Yu. This speech of his directly prompted Cao Ren to change strategy and decide to go out of the city to meet the enemy, thus laying the groundwork for the ensuing battle. Xiahou Cun's appearance not only advances the plot but also provides a foil for Guan Yu's martial prowess.

In the battle that followed, Xiahou Cun went out to fight together with Zhai Yuan. Guan Yu first sent Liao Hua to feign defeat, luring Zhai Yuan into pursuit. The next day, Xiahou Cun and Zhai Yuan again sallied out together, pursuing the once more "defeated and retreating" Jing Province troops. This, however, was precisely the trap Guan Yu had laid. When the Cao army had pursued for more than twenty li, Guan Ping and Liao Hua struck out from behind, throwing the Cao army into chaos. Once Cao Ren saw through the ruse, he retreated in panic, only to have Guan Yu block his path. At this point Xiahou Cun arrived with his troops, and upon seeing Guan Yu, charged forward to do battle without regard for anything. Yet his duel with Guan Yu lasted only "a single bout" before he was cut down from his horse by Guan Yu. Xiahou Cun's swift demise further highlighted Guan Yu's peerless martial skill and foreshadowed the rout of the Cao army. His end also confirmed Man Chong's earlier judgment that Guan Yu was "valiant and strategic, not to be taken lightly."

Key Relationships

* Guan Yu: The relationship between Xiahou Cun and Guan Yu is a typical hostile one. In the romance, Xiahou Cun, underestimating the enemy, fought Guan Yu and was in the end slain by him, becoming one of the backdrops to Guan Yu's far-reaching renown (novel only).
* Cao Ren: Xiahou Cun was a valiant general under Cao Ren and had a certain influence on Cao Ren's military decisions, having persuaded Cao Ren to go out of the city and engage Guan Yu (novel only).
* Man Chong: Xiahou Cun and Man Chong held differing views on military strategy; Xiahou Cun disdained Man Chong's "scholar's talk" and advocated an active sally (novel only).
* Zhai Yuan: Xiahou Cun and Zhai Yuan were both generals under Cao Ren; in the Battle of Fancheng they sallied out together and were together slain by Guan Yu and Guan Ping (novel only).

Iconic Scenes

* Strongly advocating battle, disdaining Man Chong: Before the Battle of Fancheng, when Cao Ren was hesitant, Xiahou Cun overrode the others' objections, regarding Man Chong's strategy of holding firm as "a scholar's talk," and boasted, "When water comes, earth dams it; when the general arrives, troops meet him," successfully persuading Cao Ren to go out of the city and engage Guan Yu. This scene displays his brave but somewhat rash character (novel only).
* Cut down in a single bout, perishing under Guan Yu's blade: In his face-to-face clash with Guan Yu, Xiahou Cun was slain by Guan Yu after only a single bout. This scene not only highlights Guan Yu's matchless martial skill but also marks the end of Xiahou Cun's fate as a character, the most iconic moment for him in the romance (novel only).
