布妻嚴氏聞之，出問曰：「君欲何往？」布告以陳宮之謀。嚴氏曰：「君委全城，捐妻子，孤軍遠出，倘一旦有變，妾豈得為將軍之妻乎？」布躊躇未決，三日不出。宮入見曰：「操軍四面圍城，若不早出，必受其困。」布曰：「吾思遠出不如堅守。」宮曰：「近聞操軍糧少，遣人往許都去取，早晚將至。將軍可引精兵往斷其糧道。此計大妙。」
Lady Yan was Lü Bu’s principal wife. She appears in chapters 16 and 19 of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms; the Records of the Three Kingdoms makes no mention of her.
Deeds
In chapter 16, Yuan Shu sent Han Yin to seek Lü Bu’s daughter’s hand in marriage for his son. Lü Bu went inside to discuss the matter with Lady Yan. She believed that Yuan Shu had ample troops and provisions, and that if he achieved great things, their daughter might one day become an empress or consort. Even if she could not become empress, accepting the proposal would ensure Xu Province’s security. Lü Bu therefore agreed to the marriage. (Romance)
In chapter 19, Lü Bu told Lady Yan of Chen Gong’s plan to leave the city. She wept and urged him not to go, fearing that Chen Gong and Gao Shun would be unable to hold the city. She also recalled that Lü Bu had once left her behind in Chang'an, and that she had been reunited with him only because Pang Shu had secretly sheltered her. She implored Lü Bu not to abandon her again. Lü Bu consequently hesitated and did not leave for three days. (Romance)
