    Historical Record

Sun Luban, courtesy name Dahu, was the eldest daughter of Sun Quan and Lady Bu. She first married Zhou Xun, son of Zhou Yu, and later married Quan Cong. Through her status and marriages, she became involved in the Eastern Wu court and the politics of powerful in-law families. Historical accounts record that she urged Sun Liang to marry Quan Shang’s daughter, forging a marriage tie between the Quan family and Sun Liang. Sun Liang later became crown prince and then ascended the throne, while the Quan woman was made empress; Quan Shang and his family enjoyed a period of prominence.

When Sun He was crown prince, Sun Luban was at odds with his mother, Lady Wang. While Sun Quan was ill, Sun He went to perform rites at the ancestral temple. Because he stopped at the residence of a consort along the way, Sun Luban sent someone to keep watch, then told Sun Quan that the crown prince had not gone to the temple but had gone straight to the consort’s residence to confer with her. She also claimed that Lady Wang seemed pleased to see Sun Quan gravely ill. Sun Quan flew into a rage as a result, and Lady Wang died in anxiety and fear; Sun He’s favor also gradually waned. Sun He was later deposed. Sun Luban, meanwhile, was closely associated with Sun Jun; after Sun Jun took power, Sun He was transferred to Xindu and put to death by imperial order.

Sun Luban also became estranged from her younger sister, Sun Luyu. After Sun Yi’s Plot to Assassinate Sun Jun was exposed, she accused Sun Luyu of conspiring with Sun Yi, and Sun Jun consequently had Sun Luyu wrongfully killed. Sun Liang later asked about the reason for Sun Luyu’s death. Sun Luban said that Zhu Xiong and Zhu Sun had reported the matter, so Sun Liang had the two men killed. This deepened Sun Lin’s suspicions of Sun Liang. After Sun Liang took personal control of the government, he once discussed plotting to kill Sun Lin with Sun Luban, Quan Shang, and Liu Cheng. But when Sun Lin learned of the plan, he struck first and deposed Sun Liang.

    In the Novel

The materials provided contain no account of Sun Luban in novels such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms, so they do not allow us to summarize her portrayal, words, actions, or dramatized experiences in fiction. Nor can the court struggles described in historical accounts be recast as scenes from a novel. The available materials relate only the marriages, political conflicts, and associated events recorded in the Records of the Three Kingdoms and Pei Songzhi’s annotations.

    • Sun Liang, Empress Quan, and Quan Shang: Sun Luban urged Sun Quan to take Quan Shang’s daughter as a wife for Sun Liang. Sun Liang later ascended the throne, and the Quan woman was made empress; Quan Shang and his relatives consequently rose to prominence.
    • Lady Wang and Sun He: Sun Luban was at odds with Lady Wang and spoke to Sun Quan in a way that led to Lady Wang being rebuked and Sun He losing favor. Sun He was later deposed and put to death by imperial order.
    • Sun Luyu, Zhu Xiong, and Zhu Sun: Sun Luban falsely accused her younger sister, Sun Luyu, of involvement in Sun Yi’s Plot to Assassinate Sun Jun. After Sun Luyu was killed, she attributed the accusation to Zhu Xiong and Zhu Sun, who were ultimately executed by Sun Liang.

    Defining Scenes

The episode that most clearly shows Sun Luban’s political influence took place while Sun Quan was gravely ill and Sun He was performing rites at the ancestral temple. Sun He’s route took him past a consort’s residence, and Sun Luban used this to speak to Sun Quan, interpreting Lady Wang’s expression as one of pleasure. Historical accounts say that Sun Quan flew into a rage as a result, Lady Wang died of anxiety, and Sun He lost favor. Her intervention brought courtly enmities into the struggle over the succession, demonstrating her influence on Sun Quan’s judgment and the succession crisis.

Another episode centered on Sun Luyu’s death. After Sun Yi’s Plot to Assassinate Sun Jun was exposed, Sun Luban accused her younger sister of conspiring with him; Sun Jun wrongfully had Sun Luyu killed on that basis. Later, when Sun Liang asked about the cause of death, Sun Luban pointed to Zhu Xiong and Zhu Sun as the informants, and Sun Liang had the two men killed. When Sun Liang plotted to kill Sun Lin, Sun Luban again took the emperor’s side and joined the secret discussions. But the plan was exposed: Sun Lin launched a night attack on Quan Shang, surrounded the palace, and ultimately deposed Sun Liang. Together, these episodes trace a sequence of shifts in court power and reveal how the positions taken by Sun Luban shaped conflicts within the ruling family and the political order.
