史载(Historical Record)

The life and deeds of Yuan Yi, styled Boye, are scarcely recorded in the official histories—indeed, one might say there is almost no direct historical material giving a detailed account of him. In the official canon such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Yuan Yi has no independent biography; his name is occasionally mentioned only in passing in records concerning other figures, especially members of his family. This makes it impossible to construct from the histories a complete trajectory of his life, his offices, his achievements, or his specific words and deeds. Therefore, the verifiable historical material on Yuan Yi is extremely scarce, insufficient to support a detailed narrative of his personal experiences.

演中(In the Novel)

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yuan Yi's appearance is likewise very limited, mentioned only once, in Chapter 5. As one of the eighteen lords, he answered Cao Cao's call to campaign jointly against Dong Zhuo. In the novel, Yuan Yi is listed as "Inspector of Yang Province", joining the alliance together with the Governor of Ji Province Han Fu, the Inspector of Yu Province Kong Zhou, the Inspector of Yanzhou Liu Dai, the Grand Administrator of Henei Wang Kuang, the Grand Administrator of Chenliu Zhang Miao, the Grand Administrator of Dong Commandery Qiao Mao, the Grand Administrator of Shanyang Yuan Yi, the Chancellor of Jibei Bao Xin, the Grand Administrator of Beihai Kong Rong, the Grand Administrator of Guangling Zhang Chao, the Inspector of Xu Province Tao Qian, the Grand Administrator of Xiliang Ma Teng, the Grand Administrator of Beiping Gongsun Zan, the Grand Administrator of Shangdang Zhang Yang, the Marquis of Wucheng and Grand Administrator of Changsha Sun Jian, the Grand Administrator of Bohai Yuan Shao, and the General of the Rear and Grand Administrator of Nanyang Yuan Shu, and others. This alliance is an important opening event in the novel, meant to display the grand scene of heroes rising together to campaign against the traitor of the state. Yuan Yi's role in the novel is merely that of one among the many lords; his specific words and deeds, military strategy, or personal character are not deeply portrayed. He plays no important role in subsequent chapters, nor is any specific battle performance or political activity depicted. Therefore, Yuan Yi's image in Romance of the Three Kingdoms is more that of a background figure, used to set off the atmosphere of an age of contending heroes, rather than a key figure with an independent plot thread.

关键关系

As a member of the Yuan family, Yuan Yi's most crucial relationship is undoubtedly his connection to the Yuan clan of Runan, "three dukes over four generations." Although the histories lack any clear record of his specific generational standing in the family or his closeness to figures such as Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, in Romance of the Three Kingdoms he is listed as one of the eighteen lords, placed alongside Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, hinting that he may have held a certain standing or influence in the Yuan family. However, the novel does not delve into his interactions or alliances with Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu, presenting him merely as one member of the alliance against Dong Zhuo.

标志性场景

Yuan Yi's only iconic scene in Romance of the Three Kingdoms is his participation in the alliance of "the eighteen lords campaigning against Dong Zhuo." In Chapter 5 of the novel, he gathered together with the other seventeen lords to take part in the great undertaking, electing Yuan Shao alliance leader and swearing together to campaign against Dong Zhuo. This scene is an important component of the novel's opening, displaying the situation of heroes rising together in the late Han. As Inspector of Yang Province, Yuan Yi held a place in the oath, symbolizing the local separatist forces' challenge to the authority of the court. However, apart from attending this alliance, Yuan Yi has no other specific action or event depicted in the novel, nor any outstanding performance in the campaign against Dong Zhuo. Therefore, this alliance became his only identifiable "appearance" in the literary work, and constitutes the whole of his "iconic scenes."
