Historical Record

Wen Chou, an important general under Yuan Shao, has little recorded about his life in the official histories, with the record concentrated mainly on his military activities during the contest between Yuan Shao and Cao Cao. According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Wen Chou and Yan Liang were both chief generals in Yuan Shao's army, relied upon by Yuan Shao as his trusted right-hand men. After Yuan Shao crushed Gongsun Zan and absorbed his forces, his power grew greatly; commanding several hundred thousand troops, he resolved to march south against Cao Cao. In this military operation Yuan Shao appointed Shen Pei and Feng Ji to direct the army, with Tian Feng, Xun Chen, and Xu You as chief strategists, while Yan Liang and Wen Chou were explicitly listed as the commanding generals c:5479. This shows that Wen Chou held a fairly high military position within Yuan Shao's group and was one of the leading generals Yuan Shao relied upon. The historical sources do not record in detail Wen Chou's family background, early experiences, or specific exploits; his image is presented chiefly through his identity as a core part of Yuan Shao's military strength. The official history, however, also gives no clear account of Wen Chou's end, contrasting with the detailed treatment in the novel.

In the Novel

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wen Chou is portrayed as fuller and more valiant, a fierce general under Yuan Shao, ranked alongside Yan Liang as the "Twin Heroes of Hebei." He first appears during the campaign of the lords against Dong Zhuo, when Yuan Shao and Sun Jian quarreled over the Imperial Hereditary Seal; Wen Chou and Yan Liang together drew their swords, intending to help Yuan Shao deal with Sun Jian c:2026. Later, during Yuan Shao's seizure of Jizhou, Wen Chou again displayed his valor, together with Yan Liang cutting down Geng Wu and Guan Chun, who had plotted to assassinate Yuan Shao c:2027, rendering merit in helping Yuan Shao take control of Jizhou smoothly. In Yuan Shao's clashes with Gongsun Zan, Wen Chou shone all the more brilliantly, once fighting Gongsun Zan for more than ten bouts, defeating him and pursuing him. During the pursuit, Wen Chou engaged in a fierce battle with the young Zhao Yun, the two fighting fifty or sixty bouts without a decisive result, showing his extraordinary martial skill c:2028.

Wen Chou's best-known moment in the novel is his showing in the early stage of the Battle of Guandu. After Yan Liang was slain by Guan Yu, Wen Chou volunteered to avenge Yan Liang and, with Yuan Shao's approval, led a great army across the Yellow River to pursue Cao Cao c:5481. In this operation, Liu Bei requested to accompany Wen Chou, but Wen Chou belittled Liu Bei and assigned him only thirty thousand troops as the rear, while he himself led seventy thousand in advance c:10983. In the end, Wen Chou was killed by Guan Yu in the fighting against Cao Cao's army. Through these episodes the novel portrays Wen Chou as a brave general who is at times somewhat careless in underestimating his enemies, and his end also adds luster to Guan Yu's image as the Saint of War.
