In the Novel
In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Qiao Guolao is a figure of considerable weight, especially playing a key role in the marriage of Liu Bei and Sun Shangxiang. He first appears in Chapter 54, in the capacity of a trusted confidant and adviser of the Dowager Lady Wu (Wu Guotai). At the time, Zhou Yu had devised the "beauty trap," intending under the pretext of a marriage alliance to lure and capture Liu Bei in exchange for Jing Province. Qiao Guolao, though privy to the scheme, did not directly take part in it; instead he became the key figure in exposing the truth and bringing about a genuine marriage.
When Liu Bei came to Eastern Wu according to the plan, Qiao Guolao first called on Wu Guotai and told her that Liu Bei had arrived and had come to marry Sun Shangxiang. Wu Guotai, knowing nothing of this, was greatly astonished and at once summoned Sun Quan to question him. Sun Quan tried to conceal the truth, claiming this was Zhou Yu's scheme and not a genuine marriage proposal. Qiao Guolao, however, pointed out bluntly: "This old man has known of it for many days, and has come especially to offer congratulations." He further stressed that if this scheme succeeded, then even if Jing Province were gained, Sun Quan would be mocked by all the world. His words enraged Wu Guotai, who came to loathe Zhou Yu's scheme and firmly opposed it. Qiao Guolao seized the moment to persuade Sun Quan that, since matters had developed this far, it would be better to go along with the current and truly marry his daughter to Liu Bei, so as to avoid disgrace. He overruled the objections of all, praising Liu Bei as "a hero of the present age—if you gain such a son-in-law, it will not dishonor your younger sister." In the end, with the insistence of Qiao Guolao and Wu Guotai, Sun Quan was compelled to agree to let Wu Guotai personally inspect Liu Bei.
At the matchmaking meeting at Ganlu Temple, Qiao Guolao again played his part. He accompanied Wu Guotai to meet Liu Bei. On seeing Liu Bei, Wu Guotai was deeply satisfied with his "dragon-and-phoenix bearing, the countenance of sun and sky," and at once declared, "Truly this is my son-in-law!" Qiao Guolao also seized the chance to extol Liu Bei's benevolence and virtue, further cementing Wu Guotai's decision. After the marriage was settled, Liu Bei, fearing that the Eastern Wu side might cause trouble, once sought Qiao Guolao's help. Qiao Guolao promised to advise Wu Guotai so as to protect Liu Bei's safety. Throughout the whole affair of the "beauty trap," Qiao Guolao, with his uprightness, wisdom, and influence over Wu Guotai, successfully turned a political conspiracy into a sincere marriage, thereby altering the course of history (novel only).
