Zheng Xiang was a Wei state soldier defending Hefei Xincheng. He is mentioned in chapter 4 of the Records of the Three Kingdoms; the Romance of the Three Kingdoms does not mention him.

Deeds

  • When Zhuge Ke besieged Hefei Xincheng, Zheng Xiang was ordered to leave the city and deliver a message. Wu forces found him and took him back with them. (According to historical records)
  • The Wu forces bound Zheng Xiang with his hands behind his back and brought him outside the city, ordering him to shout, “The great army has returned to Luo; you would do better to surrender early.” Zheng Xiang refused. Instead, he shouted loudly to tell the Wei troops inside the city that the enemy was still surrounding them, encouraging the defenders to fight on. (According to historical records)
  • The Wu forces stuffed his mouth with a knife, but Zheng Xiang continued shouting loudly so that those inside the city could hear him. The Wei court later posthumously awarded him the rank of Marquis of Guanzhong, removed his status as an ordinary soldier, and allowed his son to inherit the title. (According to historical records)

Relationships

  • Like Liu Zheng, he was a Wei soldier entrusted with delivering messages, and the Wei court honored the two together.
  • He had a son who inherited his title of Marquis of Guanzhong.
