In the Novel

In the *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, Xi Lü is cast as a trusted confidant of Cao Cao, his image displayed mainly through two key episodes. He first appears in the conflict between Cao Cao and Kong Rong. Xi Lü was then serving as Grand Master of Imperial Censors (yushi dafu), and because a retainer of his household had heard Kong Rong's slights against Cao Cao, the retainer reported the matter to Xi Lü. Xi Lü had long harbored resentment at Kong Rong's arrogance and rudeness, and so seized the chance to inform on him to Cao Cao. He not only reported Kong Rong's remarks but, embellishing the account, pointed out that Kong Rong habitually made light of and insulted the Chancellor, and mentioned Kong Rong's close ties with Mi Heng, implying that Mi Heng's humiliation of Cao Cao had in fact been instigated by Kong Rong. Hearing this, Cao Cao flew into a rage and ordered the Commandant of Justice to arrest Kong Rong. This episode casts Xi Lü as a base man, skilled at reading faces and seizing chances to take revenge, whose act of informing directly led to the tragedy of Kong Rong and his family.

Xi Lü's second important appearance is in the affair of Cao Cao's deposing of Empress Fu. By this time he was commander of the Imperial Forest Army (yulinjun), and on the orders of the Duke of Wei (Cao Cao), bearing the credential staff, he entered the palace to confiscate Empress Fu's seal and ribbon. The novel depicts Xi Lü leading three hundred armored soldiers to break straight through the palace gate; faced with Emperor Xian's questioning, he bluntly stated that he came on the orders of the Duke of Wei. He then entered the inner palace, demanded the imperial seal from its keeper, and carried it out. Although Empress Fu tried to hide, she was finally found out by Hua Xin. In this affair Xi Lü played the role of Cao Cao's executor and instrument, acting decisively and heedless of the emperor's dignity, fully embodying Cao Cao's absolute authority at court and his contempt for the Han house. Both episodes highlight Xi Lü's identity as Cao Cao's hawk and hound: he used his official power to clear away rivals for Cao Cao and consolidate his power, an indispensable link in Cao Cao's monopolizing of authority.

Key Relationships

* Kong Rong (enemy_of): There was clear enmity between Xi Lü and Kong Rong. In the *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, Xi Lü, often slighted by Kong Rong, harbored resentment and finally seized the chance to denounce Kong Rong's remarks to Cao Cao, directly bringing about Kong Rong's arrest and execution. This relationship combined personal grudge with political struggle; Xi Lü exploited Cao Cao's power to attain his revenge against Kong Rong (novel-only).
* Cao Wei (serves): In the novel Xi Lü is an important member of Cao Cao's camp, all of his actions unfolding in the service of Cao Cao's interests. As Grand Master of Imperial Censors and commander of the Imperial Forest Army, he was Cao Cao's instrument for clearing away rivals and consolidating power. Whether informing on Kong Rong or, on orders, deposing Empress Fu, both reflect his loyalty and executive capacity toward the Cao Wei regime.
* Cao Cao (serves): Xi Lü was a faithful follower and capable agent of Cao Cao. He understood Cao Cao's mind well and could seize the right moment to remove political obstacles for him. Cao Cao, too, showed full trust in Xi Lü, entrusting to him a matter as sensitive and important as deposing the empress. Through his actions, Xi Lü effectively upheld and strengthened Cao Cao's authority.

Iconic Scenes

* Informing on Kong Rong: One of Xi Lü's iconic scenes is his denouncing of Kong Rong to Cao Cao. Exploiting Kong Rong's slights against Cao Cao, and embellishing the account by dragging in Kong Rong's relationship with Mi Heng, he successfully enraged Cao Cao and brought about Kong Rong's arrest. This scene not only displays Xi Lü's sinister, vengeful nature but also reveals the ruthless means by which Cao Cao removed his rivals (novel-only).
* Bearing the credential staff into the palace to confiscate the empress's seal and ribbon: Another iconic scene is Xi Lü, on Cao Cao's orders, bearing the credential staff into the palace to confiscate Empress Fu's seal and ribbon. He led armored soldiers straight in through the palace gate and, faced with Emperor Xian's questioning, did not flinch but stated his purpose outright. This scene profoundly depicts the decline of the Han house and Cao Cao's overbearing power; as the executor, Xi Lü is a cold, merciless symbol in this transfer of power (novel-only).
