史载(Historical Record)
Yuan Xi, the second son of the late-Han warlord Yuan Shao, has a life that revolves chiefly around the rise and fall of Yuan Shao's faction. After Yuan Shao defeated Gongsun Zan and absorbed his forces, his power reached its peak, and he thereupon conceived the intention of granting territories to his sons. He sent his eldest son Yuan Tan to Qing Province, while his second son Yuan Xi was appointed Inspector of You Province. Yuan Shao's aim was to let his sons each hold a province so as to observe their abilities; however, this decision drew remonstrance from his adviser Ju Shou, who held that it would surely become the beginning of disaster—but Yuan Shao did not heed him.
After Yuan Shao was defeated by Cao Cao at the Battle of Guandu, his power began to wane. After Yuan Shao's death, his sons Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang fell into strife over the succession, hastening the collapse of the Yuan faction. As Inspector of You Province, Yuan Xi's specific role and actions in the brothers' power struggle are little recorded in the histories, but his fate was undoubtedly bound to the entire Yuan faction. In the end, the Yuan brothers were driven back step by step in their confrontation with Cao Cao, and Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi, with nowhere left to turn, fled to Gongsun Kang, the Grand Administrator of Liaodong. Gongsun Kang, however, did not take them in; instead he beheaded the two and presented their heads to Cao Cao to show his submission. Yuan Xi's wife, Lady Zhen, after Ye was taken by Cao Cao, was taken by Cao Pi and became his consort.
演中(In the Novel)
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yuan Xi's image essentially matches the historical record, but with added literary detail and incident, especially in the infighting among the Yuan brothers after Yuan Shao's death, where his standing as the second son is highlighted. The novel makes clear that Yuan Shao had three sons: the eldest Yuan Tan, the second Yuan Xi, and the third Yuan Shang. Yuan Xi was sent to You Province, while Yuan Shang, being the son of Yuan Shao's later wife Lady Liu and possessing a handsome and imposing appearance, was deeply favored by Yuan Shao and kept by his side. This laid the groundwork for the succession dispute between Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang after Yuan Shao's death, and indirectly affected Yuan Xi's fate.
After Yuan Shao's defeat at Guandu, Lady Liu urged him to establish Yuan Shang as his heir, and Yuan Shao deliberated with four men—Shen Pei, Feng Ji, Xin Ping, and Guo Tu. Among them, Shen Pei and Feng Ji supported Yuan Shang, while Xin Ping and Guo Tu supported Yuan Tan; this factional struggle had already shown itself in Yuan Shao's lifetime and ultimately led to the mutual slaughter of the Yuan brothers.
Under Cao Cao's pursuit, Yuan Xi and Yuan Shang at last led several thousand horsemen in flight to Liaodong, seeking refuge with Gongsun Kang. After deliberating with his subordinate officials, Gongsun Kang decided not to take the two in, but to lure and kill them and present their heads to Cao Cao. The strategy proposed by Gongsun Kang's younger brother Gongsun Gong was that if Cao's troops came to attack, they would keep the two Yuans as support; if Cao Cao did not move, they would kill the two Yuans and present them to Cao Cao. This episode is depicted in detail in the novel, displaying Gongsun Kang's cunning and the Yuan brothers' dead end.
Moreover, the novel mentions Yuan Xi's wife, Lady Zhen. After Cao Cao took Ye, Lady Zhen was taken by Cao Pi and bore him a son, Cao Rui. Lady Zhen later lost favor due to the slander of Consort Guo and was at last ordered by Cao Pi to take her own life. Cao Rui was adopted by Consort Guo and at last became the heir of the state of Wei. Although this passage centers chiefly on Lady Zhen and Cao Pi, it also indirectly notes Yuan Xi's identity as Lady Zhen's former husband.
