In the Novel
Dang Jun is a fictional figure in Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, appearing chiefly in the later part of the novel, that is, the final years of Shu Han. He is portrayed as a strategist under Deng Ai, his main function being to carry out a stratagem of sowing discord, alienating the ruler and ministers of Shu Han so as to create favorable conditions for Wei's campaign against Shu. Dang Jun first appears in Chapter 113 of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. At that time Deng Ai, having met with defeat in his clashes with Jiang Wei and wounded by four arrows, confers with Sima Wang on a plan to withdraw. Sima Wang proposes exploiting the weakness of the lord of Shu, Liu Shan, in his favor toward the eunuch Huang Hao, deploying a stratagem of sowing discord to recall Jiang Wei. Against this background, Dang Jun volunteers, declaring himself willing to go to Chengdu to carry out the task.
At Deng Ai's order, Dang Jun, carrying gold, silver, and jewels, secretly goes to Chengdu and makes contact with Huang Hao. By bribing Huang Hao and spreading rumors in Chengdu—claiming that Jiang Wei harbored resentment against Liu Shan and intended to surrender to Cao Wei—these rumors spread swiftly in Chengdu, so that "everyone in Chengdu said the same thing". Huang Hao believed the slander and reported the matter to Liu Shan. Liu Shan duly fell into the trap and at once dispatched an envoy to summon Jiang Wei back to court by night, thereby relieving the military pressure Deng Ai faced.
In Chapter 114, after successfully completing his task, Dang Jun returns to the Mount Qi stockade and reports the situation in Chengdu to Deng Ai and Sima Wang. He informs the two that Jiang Wei has been recalled and that the ruler and ministers of Shu Han are now at odds. Hearing this, Deng Ai and Sima Wang judge that "with ruler and ministers at odds, there must be internal upheaval". Dang Jun is then again ordered to go to Luoyang to report the matter to Sima Zhao. On learning that internal conflict has arisen within Shu Han, Sima Zhao is overjoyed and conceives the idea of campaigning against Shu. Dang Jun's role in the novel ends here; as a key executor, he advances the progress of Wei's campaign against Shu and indirectly brings about Sima Zhao's resolve to campaign against Shu. Although he appears only a few times in the novel, the stratagem of sowing discord that he carries out plays an important part in advancing the plot.
