Historical Record

Li Kan has no explicit record in the official history; his life, official posts, faction, and final fate are nowhere found in biographical materials such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms. Therefore the historical authenticity of Li Kan and his specific activities during the Three Kingdoms period cannot be verified from the surviving sources. This means that any discussion of the figure of Li Kan must rely chiefly on his portrayal in literary works.

In the Novel

Li Kan appears in Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a fictional character, mentioned chiefly in chapters fifty-eight and fifty-nine. He is depicted as a general under Ma Chao who, together with Yang Fu, Zhao Qu, Liang Kuan, Ma Wan, Cheng Yin, Zhang Heng, and others, took part in a revolt against Ma Chao. In the novel, Li Kan and Yang Fu and the others conspired, intending to launch an attack from within while Ma Chao was assaulting Jicheng, so as to weaken Ma Chao's forces and ultimately defeat him. This episode was created by Romance of the Three Kingdoms to enrich Ma Chao's military career and characterization, and has no corresponding record in history.

In the novel, Li Kan, together with the other rebel generals, exploited Ma Chao's trust in them to carry out their betrayal at the Battle of Jicheng. They first feigned surrender to gain Ma Chao's trust, then struck when he was off guard, launching an attack within the city and casting Ma Chao into a desperate plight. Li Kan played the role of an accomplice in this chain of events, an important link in the internal collapse of Ma Chao's camp. His appearance serves chiefly to heighten the tragic color of Ma Chao's experience of betrayal and to display Ma Chao's struggle and counterattack amid adversity. In the end, the fate of Li Kan and the other rebel generals also becomes part of the story of Ma Chao's revenge.

Key Relationships

* With Ma Chao: In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Li Kan is a general under Ma Chao, but in the end he betrayed Ma Chao and took part in the revolt against him (unique to the novel). This relationship, shifting from initial loyalty to enmity, is one of the key factors in the turning point of Ma Chao's personal fortunes in the novel.
* With Yang Fu, Zhao Qu, Liang Kuan, Ma Wan, Cheng Yin, Zhang Heng: Li Kan, together with these figures, formed the alliance that revolted against Ma Chao, their relationship one of mutual collaboration as co-conspirators (unique to the novel). Their collective action constituted a great threat to Ma Chao and ultimately caused him to suffer a heavy blow at Jicheng.

Iconic Scenes

* Plotting Rebellion at Jicheng: Li Kan and Yang Fu and the others secretly schemed within Jicheng, deciding to betray Ma Chao and drawing up a detailed plan of action (unique to the novel). This scene is Li Kan's most central involvement in the novel, directly driving the development of the later plot and displaying his side as a rebel.
* Launching the Attack Within the City: While Ma Chao was assaulting Jicheng, Li Kan and the other rebel generals together launched a sudden attack within the city, throwing Ma Chao's army into confusion and inflicting heavy losses (unique to the novel). This scene is the climax of Li Kan's action, directly causing Ma Chao's defeat and retreat and laying the groundwork for his later revenge. Though the specific details of Li Kan's conduct in this scene are not greatly elaborated, his participation alone suffices to mark his role in the novel.
