Historical Record

As for Mang Yazhang, the official histories such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms make no explicit mention of him. This means that in the verifiable historical documents there is no record whatsoever of his life, deeds, or the role he played during the Three Kingdoms period. Therefore, from a purely historiographical standpoint, Mang Yazhang is not a figure attestable in history. His existence and activities are entirely the product of literary creation, not a true reflection of history.

In the Novel

Mang Yazhang appears in Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms as one of the leading generals under Meng Huo, and his image is entirely a literary creation. He first appears in Chapter 87, at the time when the Shu Han Chancellor Zhuge Liang was campaigning to the south and Meng Huo led troops to resist. In one clash, Mang Yazhang came forth, wielding a broad sabre with a cut-off head and riding a yellow-dappled horse, to meet the Shu general Wang Ping. After the two generals had fought several bouts, Wang Ping feigned defeat and fled. Seeing this, Meng Huo, thinking the Shu army no match, drove his troops forward in a great advance, pursuing them along the way. Then Guan Suo too fought briefly and withdrew, luring the enemy deeper still. This was in fact a decoy stratagem laid by Zhuge Liang.

As Meng Huo was in hot pursuit, shouts suddenly arose all around: Zhang Ni on the left and Zhang Yi on the right, two columns of troops burst forth and cut off the barbarian army's line of retreat. Wang Ping and Guan Suo also turned back to fight, attacking from front and rear, so that the barbarian troops were heavily defeated. Only through the desperate fighting of his generals did Meng Huo manage to escape, fleeing in panic toward Brocade-Belt Mountain. Although the novel does not explicitly state Mang Yazhang's final fate in this battle, as a general of Meng Huo he very likely suffered heavy losses in this great defeat, or was captured or killed in the subsequent pursuit—only the novel does not describe it in detail. Mang Yazhang's function in the novel is mainly to serve as one of Meng Huo's fighting generals: through his appearance and clash with the Shu general, he sets off Meng Huo's military strength and lays the groundwork for Zhuge Liang's stratagem of cleverly capturing Meng Huo. His image, though brief, adds color to the campaigns of the southern expedition.

Key Relationships

* Meng Huo (commands_in): Mang Yazhang is one of the leading generals under Meng Huo. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he obeys Meng Huo's command and charges into battle in the clashes with the Shu army. This superior-subordinate relationship is the core of his existence in the novel. As the supreme commander of the Southern Man, Meng Huo had many valiant generals under him, and Mang Yazhang was one of them, reflecting Meng Huo's military strength in the Nanzhong region. This relationship cannot be verified in the historical sources and is entirely a fiction of the novel (unique to the novel).

Signature Scene

* Meeting Wang Ping and Falling into Ambush: Mang Yazhang's most signature scene is in Chapter 87 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where, on Meng Huo's orders, wielding a broad sabre with a cut-off head and riding a yellow-dappled horse, he took the field against the Shu general Wang Ping. After he had fought Wang Ping several bouts, Wang Ping feigned defeat and fled, luring Meng Huo's great army in deep. Then the Shu ambush troops rose up on every side, and Meng Huo was heavily defeated. Although Mang Yazhang achieved no outstanding feat in this battle, and may even have fallen into difficulty along with Meng Huo, this sortie was the only military action of his explicitly depicted in the novel, and is the concentrated embodiment of his image as a general of Meng Huo. This scene is entirely the literary creation of the novel and has no clear basis in history (unique to the novel).
