Historical Record

Wang Kang was a deputy of the prefecture of Yongchang Commandery during the Shu Han period. When the Shu Han Chancellor Zhuge Liang led his Southern Campaign to suppress rebellion, the situation in Yongchang Commandery was especially noteworthy. At that time forces such as Yong Kai and Gao Ding stirred up turmoil in the northeast of Yongchang Commandery, but Wang Kang, together with the commandery officer Lü Kai and others, steadfastly held to loyalty and righteousness, refusing to communicate with the rebels and displaying the highest integrity. c:5872

In the course of his Southern Campaign, when Zhuge Liang learned of the loyal and steadfast conduct in Yongchang Commandery, he was deeply impressed. He submitted a memorial to the Latter Lord Liu Shan, specially mentioning that Lü Kai, Wang Kang, and others had, in a remote and isolated region, held fast to their loyalty for more than ten years as on a single day, and praised the honest and upright customs of Yongchang. Zhuge Liang held that, at a time when rebellion arose on all sides, Yongchang Commandery was still able to maintain stability, and that the steadfastness of Wang Kang and the others was an indispensable merit. Therefore, after the pacification of the Nanzhong Rebellion, Wang Kang, for his loyalty and contribution, was enfeoffed as a Pavilion Marquis and appointed Administrator of Yongchang, continuing to guard the region. c:5872

The Genealogy of the Shu Generations further records that the descendants of Wang Kang and Lü Kai, amid later historical upheavals, also carried on this spirit of loyalty and righteousness. Even when Li Xiong overran Ningzhou and the various Lü refused to attach themselves, holding the whole commandery firm, the descendants of Wang Kang and the others still maintained their upright principles, embodying generations of family loyalty and responsibility. c:5872 Although the record of Wang Kang in the historical material is brief, his holding fast to his integrity in a turbulent time played an important role in the stability of the Shu Han regime, and his acts of loyalty and righteousness earned the affirmation and commendation of Zhuge Liang.

In the Novel

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wang Kang's image is further developed and closely tied to the grand narrative of Zhuge Liang's Southern Campaign. The novel depicts how, in the third year of Jianxing (225 CE), the Nanman king Meng Huo invaded on a large scale; the Administrator of Jianning Yong Kai, the Administrator of Zangke Zhu Bao, and the Administrator of Yuexi Gao Ding all responded to Meng Huo, and only the Administrator of Yongchang Wang Kang resolutely refused to rebel. c:5873

At this point Yong Kai, Zhu Bao, and Gao Ding led their forces to join with Meng Huo and together besieged Yongchang Commandery. Wang Kang, along with the Officer of Merit Lü Kai, organized the populace to defend the city to the death, and the situation was critical. When Kongming learned of the Nanman rebellion, he decided to lead the army on a Southern Campaign in person. After Kongming reached the city of Yongchang, Wang Kang came out of the city to welcome him and introduced Lü Kai's merits to Kongming. c:12593 In the novel, Wang Kang is not only a symbol of loyalty but also an important supporter and source of information in the early stage of Zhuge Liang's Southern Campaign. He recommended to Kongming Lü Kai, who had a deep understanding of the geography and customs of Nanzhong, providing key help for Zhuge Liang's pacification of the Nanman. c:12593

In the novel, although Wang Kang's part is not large, as the defender of Yongchang Commandery he provided an important strategic foothold for Zhuge Liang's Southern Campaign, enabling the Shu Han army to advance smoothly into the heartland of Nanzhong. Compared with the historical record, the novel places greater emphasis on Wang Kang's steadfastness in the early stage of the rebellion and his direct contribution to Zhuge Liang's Southern Campaign, making his image more distinct and heroic.
