Historical Record
Sun Yu, styled Zhongyi, began his career in the Eastern Wu regime commanding troops as Colonel of Respectful Duty. Modest by nature and skilled at reassuring others, he won the affection and support of the many guests and generals from Jiangxi at the time c:1367. In the ninth year of Jian'an (204 CE), Sun Yu was appointed Grand Administrator of Danyang, and because of his virtue and ability he drew the allegiance of more than ten thousand people, his reputation growing daily. He was subsequently promoted to General Who Pacifies the Distant c:1367.
In the eleventh year of Jian'an (206 CE), Sun Yu joined Zhou Yu in a campaign against the two strongholds of Ma and Bao, successfully crushing them. Afterward he followed Sun Quan in resisting Cao Cao's assault at Ruxu. At the time Sun Quan wished to give battle to Cao Cao, but Sun Yu strongly urged him to remain prudent and not act rashly. Sun Quan, however, did not adopt his advice, and the campaign ended without result c:1367.
After the battle Sun Yu was promoted to General Who Exerts Might while continuing to hold the post of Grand Administrator of Danyang. His garrison was also moved from Liyang to Niuzhu. Deeply aware of the importance of talent, Sun Yu appointed Rao Zhu of Yongan as Chief of Xiang'an and Yan Lian of Wuxi as Chief of Juchao, sending them to the two commanderies of Lujiang to recruit talent, and successfully won the allegiance of the local populace. He also treated Ma Pu, a learned scholar of Jiyin, with generous courtesy, and arranged for several hundred sons of the officers and officials of the two offices to study under Ma Pu, thereby establishing an academic office and regularly holding banquets and lectures c:1367.
In an age when generals generally focused on military affairs, Sun Yu nonetheless had a deep interest in the ancient classics and scholarship. Even while on campaign, he never set down his books, and the sound of his recitation was constant c:1367. In the twentieth year of Jian'an (215 CE), Sun Yu died at the age of thirty-nine. He had five sons: Sun Mi, Sun Xi, Sun Yao, Sun Man, and Sun Hong. Among them, Sun Man later rose to the rank of general and was enfeoffed as a marquis c:1367.
In the Novel
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Sun Yu's image is mentioned mainly in the context of the conflict between Zhou Yu and Liu Bei's faction, his role being more that of an envoy or reinforcement dispatched by Sun Quan. In Chapter 57, when Zhou Yu burned with rage at being thwarted in his attempt to take Xichuan, Sun Yu came to assist on the orders of his elder cousin Sun Quan c:10023. In the novel, Sun Yu's appearance serves to advance the plot rather than to detail his personal life or military talent. He conveyed Sun Quan's instructions to Zhou Yu and urged the army to press on. However, upon reaching Baqiu, they encountered Liu Feng and Guan Ping, who led troops to cut off the waterway, further inflaming Zhou Yu's anger. Subsequently, Kongming sent a letter, dealing yet another setback to Zhou Yu's scheme c:10023.
Compared with the multifaceted military, political, and cultural contributions recorded in the historical sources, Romance of the Three Kingdoms portrays Sun Yu thinly, focusing mainly on his role as Sun Quan's envoy; his part in the novel is relatively limited, with only a single line of dialogue clearly recorded c:10023. The novel does not mention his modest, reassuring character or his love of the ancient classics, nor does it touch on the historical facts of his urging Sun Quan toward prudence or his establishment of an academic office, marking a significant departure from the historical material.
