Historical Record

Dan Jing, a figure of the late Eastern Han, once served the warlord Gongsun Zan. In the military confrontation between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao, Dan Jing was appointed by Gongsun Zan as Inspector of Yanzhou. At that time Gongsun Zan had gained a certain advantage in his clashes with Yuan Shao, even defeating him on one occasion. To consolidate his sphere of power, Gongsun Zan adopted a policy of enfeoffment, parceling out the regions under his control to his trusted generals. Among them, he appointed Yan Gang as Inspector of Jizhou, Tian Kai as Inspector of Qing Province, and Dan Jing as Inspector of Yanzhou. c:4789 By this Gongsun Zan meant to establish a separatist regime centered on himself and to exercise actual control over these provinces and commanderies. Yuan Shao, however, did not yield on that account. He dispatched the general Qu Yi as vanguard to do battle with Gongsun Zan's army. In this engagement Gongsun Zan's subordinate Yan Gang was captured alive by Yuan Shao's troops, and Gongsun Zan's army was thereupon heavily defeated. c:4789 After the defeat, Gongsun Zan led his army back to Bohai and, together with Gongsun Fan, Administrator of Fanyang, returned to Ji. He raised a small fortified city to the southeast of the great city, near the residence of the Han imperial kinsman Liu Yu; but relations between the two grew daily more strained, and friction arose.

In the Novel

Romance of the Three Kingdoms gives no independent literary portrayal of Dan Jing or any description of him in its plot. In the novel's narrative, Dan Jing's role is not mentioned, nor does he take part in any specific battle or event. There is therefore no record in the novel of Dan Jing's life and deeds, his character, or his specific function within Gongsun Zan's faction. This stands in contrast to the historical account of Dan Jing's appointment by Gongsun Zan as Inspector of Yanzhou, indicating that the novel was selective in its choice of figures and construction of plot, and did not incorporate every historical figure into its narrative framework. In the novel Dan Jing is an entirely absent figure, his historical presence confined to a few words of the official histories.

Key Relationships

* Gongsun Zan's faction (serves): Dan Jing was one of Gongsun Zan's important subordinates. During the crucial period of Gongsun Zan's struggle with Yuan Shao for supremacy in the north, Dan Jing was appointed by Gongsun Zan as Inspector of Yanzhou c:4789, indicating that he held a certain standing and trust within Gongsun Zan's faction. By enfeoffing Yan Gang, Tian Kai, Dan Jing, and others as inspectors, Gongsun Zan sought to build his system of local rule in order to oppose the power of Yuan Shao. Dan Jing's appointment was a concrete expression of Gongsun Zan's expanding political influence.
* Yuan Shao's Faction (opponent): As one of Gongsun Zan's generals, the power he represented—that of Gongsun Zan—stood in a hostile relation to Yuan Shao's faction. The war between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao directly affected Dan Jing's political fortunes. Yuan Shao dispatched Qu Yi to defeat Gongsun Zan's army and capture Yan Gang alive, dealing a heavy blow to Gongsun Zan's power c:4789 and indirectly affecting the Yanzhou with which Dan Jing had been enfeoffed.

Iconic Scenes

* Being enfeoffed as Inspector of Yanzhou: Dan Jing's most iconic scene is his appointment by Gongsun Zan as Inspector of Yanzhou. c:4789 This event took place in the early stage of the confrontation between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao, when Gongsun Zan, having won a certain victory, lavishly enfeoffed his trusted men to consolidate his territory. Dan Jing's enfeoffment reflected both Gongsun Zan's trust in him and the political pattern of the time, in which the various heroes of the north carved out their own domains and governed independently. As an important strategic point, the appointment of an inspector over Yanzhou was without doubt an important step in Gongsun Zan's attempt to expand his influence. Yet as Gongsun Zan suffered defeat in his subsequent battles with Yuan Shao, the actual control of the provinces and commanderies he had enfeoffed—including Dan Jing's Yanzhou—faced grave challenges. This scene is the only clearly recorded political activity of Dan Jing in the sources, and the chief basis of his historical existence.
