Zhang Yu, courtesy name Nanhe, was from Shu Commandery. He once served as an aide to Liu Zhang and as rear assistant marshal of the provincial headquarters under Shu Han; he does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Deeds
Zhang Yu was skilled at divination. He once urged Liu Bei not to contend for Hanzhong, but Liu Bei did not heed him. Although Liu Bei later took Hanzhong, Wu Lan, Lei Tong, and others entered Wudu and were utterly defeated, fulfilling Zhou Qun’s prediction. (According to historical records)
Zhang Yu privately predicted that in the gengzi year the realm would change dynasties and the fortunes of the Liu clan would come to an end. He also predicted that nine years after Liu Bei took Yi Province, he would lose it in the yin-mao period. Zhang Yu had served as an aide to Liu Zhang. When he met Liu Bei in Fu, Liu Bei mocked him over his beard, and Zhang Yu responded with the tale of the magistrate of Zhuo. (According to historical records)
Because Zhang Yu had revealed his predictions and had also shown that his advice about Hanzhong had proved correct, Liu Bei had him imprisoned. Zhuge Liang interceded on his behalf, but Liu Bei still ordered his execution, and Zhang Yu was put to death in the marketplace. (According to historical records)
Zhang Yu once read Deng Zhi’s face, predicting that after the age of seventy, Deng Zhi would rise to the position of General-in-Chief and be made a marquis. (According to historical records)
