Xie Jing

Xie Jing, courtesy name Shufa, was from Nanyang. He served Wu and was once a guest of the Crown Prince Sun Deng and Administrator of Yuzhang; he does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Deeds

Zhang Cheng recognized and promoted Xie Jing when he was young and of humble standing. Xie Jing later became a man of distinction and served as Administrator of Yuzhang.^[1] (Recorded in the histories)

Xie Jing agreed with Liu Yi’s argument that “punishment should precede ritual.” Lu Xun once criticized him to his face and urged him to follow benevolence and righteousness while serving in the Eastern Palace.^[2] (Recorded in the histories)

When Sun Deng was Crown Prince, Xie Jing was among the Eastern Palace’s guests. Sun Deng praised his skill in debate and his ability to resolve disputes.^[3] (Recorded in the histories)

When Sun Deng was gravely ill, he submitted a memorial praising Xie Jing as perceptive and discerning, with sound judgment. After Sun Deng died, Xie Jing left office and hurried to pay his respects. He submitted a memorial accusing himself of dereliction; Sun Quan consoled him, permitted him to resume his former post, and sent him back to the commandery.^[4] (Recorded in the histories)
