Historical Record
The Records of the Three Kingdoms states that Liang Qian served as chief clerk of Tianshui Commandery. In the sixth year of Jianxing, Zhuge Liang sent troops to Mount Qi. The Administrator of Tianshui went out on an inspection tour, accompanied by Liang Qian, Jiang Wei, the registrar Liang Xu, the chief clerk Yin Shang, and others. When the Administrator heard that Shu Han forces were approaching and the various counties were responding to them, he suspected his subordinates of disloyalty and fled to Shanggui at night. By the time the others caught up with him at the city gate, it had already been shut, and they could not enter. Liang Qian and the others then went with Jiang Wei to Zhuge Liang. Zhuge Liang later withdrew his troops and took Liang Qian and the others into Shu, and Liang Qian thereby left Tianshui. Historical accounts also record that he was later promoted to Central Inspector and General Who Attacks the West, eventually reaching the rank of Grand Director of the Household.
This account places Liang Qian alongside Jiang Wei in the latter’s defection to Shu, clearly identifying his post in the commandery and his journey into Shu with Zhuge Liang. It does not, however, describe any specific decisions he made during the campaign or any kinship between him and Jiang Wei. The novel’s episodes in which Liang Qian defends a city, dispatches troops, refuses Jiang Wei entry, and surrenders should not be conflated with the historical account above.
In the Novel
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms portrays Liang Qian as an official involved in military planning in Tianshui Commandery. In Chapter 92, he joins Liang Xu and Yin Shang in urging Ma Zun to send troops to relieve Nan'an. At this point, Liang Qian is on the Cao Wei side and takes part in discussions at the commandery office. In Chapter 93, when Jiang Wei leaves the city to set an ambush, Liang Qian accompanies Ma Zun in leading troops out of the city to wait. He later follows Jiang Wei’s plan, taking command of one of the forces lying in ambush outside the city alongside Ma Zun and Yin Shang, while Liang Xu is responsible for defending the walls.
The novel then has Liang Qian receive orders to lead troops in defending Shanggui. After Jiang Wei is defeated, he rushes to Shanggui for aid, but Liang Qian denounces him as a “traitor to his country” and orders the defenders on the wall to shoot arrows, refusing him entry. This episode depicts Liang Qian as a defender who firmly holds the city for Wei but misjudges Jiang Wei’s allegiance. The Records of the Three Kingdoms only records that Liang Qian entered Shu with Jiang Wei and the others; it does not mention him refusing Jiang Wei entry to Shanggui.
After Jiang Wei defects to Shu, the novel has Liang Xu come forward to persuade his younger brother Liang Qian to surrender. Liang Qian leaves the city and submits, whereupon Kongming appoints him magistrate of Shanggui. His story thus shifts from defending the city under orders to joining Shu Han, and is also tied to Liang Xu’s reunion with his brother and his efforts to secure Liang Qian’s surrender. These specific appointments and repeated changes of allegiance are inventions of the novel and have no corresponding record in historical accounts.
Key Relationships
- Jiang Wei: Historical accounts state that Liang Qian and Jiang Wei were both officials of Tianshui Commandery. After the Administrator fled to Shanggui and the city gates were shut, they and the others who had accompanied him went over to Zhuge Liang and were taken into Shu. The novel gives their relationship a more complicated turn: Liang Qian first helps Jiang Wei plan the defenses, then refuses him entry to Shanggui when he retreats after his defeat, and later surrenders after Liang Xu persuades him to do so.
- Liang Xu: The novel explicitly makes Liang Xu Liang Qian’s elder brother. Liang Xu persuades his younger brother to leave the city and surrender; afterward, Liang Xu becomes Administrator of Tianshui and Liang Qian magistrate of Shanggui. Their brotherhood and the surrender episode are unique to the novel. The Records of the Three Kingdoms lists Liang Xu and Liang Qian together as officials of Tianshui Commandery, but does not say that they were brothers.
- Ma Zun and Yin Shang: In the novel, Liang Qian and Ma Zun are both officials of Tianshui Commandery on the Wei side, and Liang Qian joins Yin Shang in taking part in the city’s defense and military deployments. The commandery officials’ assessments and shifts in the battle’s fortunes help bring about Liang Qian’s later defection to Shu.
Notable Scenes
- Entering Shu with Jiang Wei and the others: The key event in the historical account occurs after the Administrator of Tianshui abandons the city. Liang Qian and the others catch up with him at the city gate but cannot get in, so they go together to Zhuge Liang and are subsequently taken into Shu. This is the destination the historical account explicitly records for Liang Qian.
- Ambush outside Tianshui (unique to the novel): Jiang Wei plans an ambush against Zhao Yun and orders Ma Zun and Liang Qian to leave the city and wait. He then assigns Liang Qian, Ma Zun, and Yin Shang to lead separate forces in ambush, making Liang Qian part of the novel’s defensive plan.
- Refusing Jiang Wei at the gates of Shanggui (unique to the novel): Jiang Wei retreats to Shanggui after his defeat and seeks aid. Liang Qian believes he is a rebel trying to trick his way into the city and orders his men to shoot arrows. The scene highlights the misunderstanding and desperate circumstances in the novel, and directly leads to the dramatic turn in which Jiang Wei has nowhere left to go and ultimately surrenders to Kongming.
- Leaving the city to join Shu and being appointed magistrate of Shanggui (unique to the novel): After Liang Xu persuades Liang Qian to surrender, Liang Qian leaves the city, joins Shu, and is appointed magistrate of Shanggui. This is a different narrative from the historical account that Liang Qian entered Shu with Zhuge Liang and was later promoted to military posts.
