In the Novel

Chen Qian appears in Romance of the Three Kingdoms chiefly in the capacity of a Cao Wei general, taking part in the important military operation by which Sima Zhao quelled the rebellion of Zhuge Dan. In Chapter 111 of the novel, when Zhuge Dan raised troops in revolt at Shouchun, Sima Zhao decided to lead the army against him in person. He adopted Jia Chong's advice and memorialized to have the Empress Dowager and the Son of Heaven Cao Mao set out on campaign together, to make the venture properly justified. In this large-scale military operation, Sima Zhao assembled an army of two hundred sixty thousand, appointing the General Who Guards the South, Wang Ji, as chief vanguard, while Chen Qian was appointed deputy vanguard c:6663. This arrangement shows Chen Qian's standing in Sima Zhao's military faction: as deputy vanguard, he bore the important duties of assisting the chief commander and charging into the fray. In the ensuing campaign, the Wei army encountered the Eastern Wu relief force under Zhu Yi. Wang Ji rode out to meet Zhu Yi; before three bouts had passed, Zhu Yi fled in defeat; then Tang Zi rode out, and likewise, before three bouts had passed, was routed and fled. Wang Ji pressed the advantage and drove his troops in pursuit, and the Wu troops were greatly defeated, withdrawing fifty li to make camp c:6663. Although the novel does not describe Chen Qian's specific performance in this battle in detail, as deputy vanguard he undoubtedly took part in this victory and played a role in the overall deployment of the Wei army. Chen Qian's appearance further sets off the imposing momentum of Sima Zhao's suppression of the revolt and his grip on the Cao Wei regime.

In addition, together with the chief vanguard Wang Ji he served as vanguard in the campaign against Zhuge Dan, forming a military partnership (Novel only).

Iconic Scenes

Chen Qian's iconic scene is concentrated in Chapter 111 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where he was appointed by Sima Zhao as deputy vanguard in the campaign against Zhuge Dan's rebellion. Amid the grand spectacle of Sima Zhao assembling an army of two hundred sixty thousand and having the Empress Dowager and the Son of Heaven Cao Mao set out on campaign together, Chen Qian was named and appointed as one of the core generals c:6663. This scene not only establishes his role in the novel but also displays Sima Zhao's trust in and esteem for him. Although the novel does not describe Chen Qian's personal valor on the battlefield in detail, as deputy vanguard he took part in the opening battle in which the Wei army defeated the Eastern Wu relief forces under Zhu Yi and Tang Zi, witnessing the military strength and strategic deployment of Sima Zhao's faction (Novel only).
