Historical Record

Wen Hui, styled Manji, was a native of Qi County in Taiyuan. His father Wen Shu once served as Administrator of Zhuo Commandery and unfortunately died in office. When Wen Hui was fifteen, he escorted his father's coffin home for burial. The family had considerable wealth, but Wen Hui, keenly aware of the times, believed that in an age of great turmoil wealth was no foundation for security; he therefore gave away the entire family fortune to relieve his kinsmen and friends. This act won the high praise of the community, and he was compared to Xun Yue. c:5834

Because of his virtuous conduct, Wen Hui was nominated as Filial and Incorrupt, and successively served as chief of Linqiu, magistrate of Yanling, and magistrate of Guangchuan. In all these local posts he was widely praised for his outstanding administration. He was then promoted to Chancellor of Pengcheng and Chancellor of Lu, where he likewise distinguished himself. Cao Cao recruited him into the court as Registrar of the Chancellor, and later sent him out as Inspector of Yangzhou. Cao Cao greatly esteemed Wen Hui's ability, once saying: "I originally wished to keep you by my side, but considering that the affairs of Yangzhou are weighty, no one but you will do. There is an old saying: 'Excellent are the limbs and joints! In good order are the myriad affairs!' Once you reach Yangzhou, should you not make Jiang Ji your Aide of the Center?" At that time Jiang Ji was serving as Administrator of Danyang, and Cao Cao thereupon sent him back to Yangzhou to assist Wen Hui. Cao Cao also specially instructed his generals Zhang Liao, Yue Jin, and others that the Inspector of Yangzhou, Wen Hui, was versed in military affairs, and that whenever there were military operations they should consult with him. c:5834

In the twenty-fourth year of Jian'an (219 CE), Sun Quan led troops to attack Hefei. At that time, each province had troops stationed for defense. Wen Hui analyzed the situation for Pei Qian, Inspector of Yanzhou: "Although there are bandits here, they are not worth worrying about. What I worry about more is a change in the war in the south. Now is the season of rising waters, yet General Cao Ren's army is stationed at Fancheng without long-term preparations. Guan Yu is fierce and skilled in battle; advancing on the momentum of victory, he will surely become a great menace." Sure enough, the Battle of Fancheng followed. The court issued an edict summoning Pei Qian along with Lü Gong, Inspector of Yu Province, and others, but Pei Qian and the others were slow to act. Wen Hui privately said to Pei Qian: "This must mean the war at Xiangyang is urgent and you are needed to relieve it with all speed. The reason the urgency was not stated directly is to avoid alarming distant armies. Within a day or two there will surely come a secret letter urging you to hasten your advance, and Zhang Liao and the others will likewise be recalled. Zhang Liao and his fellows have always understood the King of Wei's intentions; if they are summoned later but arrive first, then you will bear the blame for delaying military affairs!" Pei Qian heeded Wen Hui's advice, immediately abandoned his heavy baggage, traveled light, and hastened his advance. Sure enough, he soon received the court's urging order. Zhang Liao and the others were also, as Wen Hui had foreseen, recalled afterward. c:2652
