Historical Record
There is very little historical material concerning Yang Ling; the official histories such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms make no direct mention of his life and deeds or his specific offices. From the standpoint of the histories, therefore, Yang Ling is an obscure figure in history, and neither his very existence nor his specific role in the Cao Wei regime can be verified.
In the Novel
In Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yang Ling appears as grand administrator of Nan'an, a member of the Cao Wei camp. He is depicted as a clansman-brother of Yang Fu c:2559, a setting that links him with the Cao Wei loyalist Yang Fu and indirectly raises his perceived loyalty in readers' eyes. Yang Ling appears chiefly during Zhuge Liang's First Northern Expedition, opposing the Shu Han army alongside Cui Liang and Xiahou Mao. After Cui Liang had been lured by Zhuge Liang's stratagem, Cui Liang explained the situation to Yang Ling, and Yang Ling showed loyalty to the Wei sovereign, declaring, "We have received great grace from the Wei sovereign—how could we bear to betray him?" c:12451. He then conspired with Cui Liang to turn the plot to their own advantage: pretending to offer the city in surrender while in fact laying an ambush, in an attempt to lure Zhuge Liang to his death. Yang Ling's plan was to have Cui Liang feign the surrender of the city, draw the Shu troops inside, and then annihilate them within the walls c:12451.
However, Zhuge Liang saw through their scheme. When Cui Liang went out of the city to report to Zhuge Liang, Zhuge Liang in turn made use of Cui Liang, sending Guan Xing and Zhang Bao disguised as relief troops from Anding to enter the city together with Cui Liang c:12453. After receiving the secret message that Cui Liang shot up to him on the wall, Yang Ling consulted with Xiahou Mao and decided to set axemen and swordsmen in ambush in the headquarters; once Guan Xing and Zhang Bao entered, they would behead them, then raise fire as a signal to lure Zhuge Liang into the city c:12453. Yet when Yang Ling descended from the wall to receive them, Guan Xing "raised his blade and cut down Yang Ling from his horse" c:12454. Yang Ling's death marked the fall of Nan'an to the Shu army and foreshadowed the capture of Xiahou Mao. In the novel, though Yang Ling has little screen time, as a local grand administrator he played an important part in opposing Zhuge Liang's Northern Expedition, and in the end lost his life because his stratagem was seen through.

Signature Scenes
* Setting an ambush at Nan'an: Yang Ling's most signature scene in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms is his conspiracy with Cui Liang and Xiahou Mao to lay a trap inside Nan'an in an attempt to lure Zhuge Liang to his death. He proposed to Xiahou Mao the plan of feigning surrender of the city, drawing the Shu troops in, and then annihilating them c:12451. This scene displays Yang Ling's resourcefulness as a local official and his loyalty to Cao Wei, even though it ultimately failed. Together with Xiahou Mao he arranged in detail for axemen and swordsmen to ambush Guan Xing and Zhang Bao, planning to raise fire as a signal to lure Zhuge Liang into the city c:12453.
* Slain at the city gate: Yang Ling's other signature scene is his being cut down by Guan Xing below the Nan'an city gate. When Yang Ling descended from the wall to receive Guan Xing, who was disguised as a relief commander from Anding, Guan Xing "raised his blade and cut down Yang Ling from his horse" c:12454. This abrupt end not only proclaimed the utter failure of Yang Ling's stratagem, but also symbolized yet another victory of Zhuge Liang's Northern Expedition and laid the groundwork for the fall of Nan'an. This scene is the close of Yang Ling's brief and dramatic career in the novel.
