Historical Record

Concerning Zhou Shan, the surviving biographical materials—such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms and Pei Songzhi's commentary—contain no clear record. Therefore, it is impossible to examine on the level of historical fact his life, deeds, identity, or relationship with Sun Quan's faction. In the official histories, Zhou Shan is in a state of "no such person on record."

In the Novel

In the literary world of Luo Guanzhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhou Shan is a trusted general of courage and executive ability, appearing mainly in Chapter 61 and playing a key role in driving the plot forward. He was chosen by Sun Quan and Zhang Zhao to carry out a secret mission aimed at retaking Adou and using him to coerce Liu Bei into handing over Jing Province c:977.

Zhou Shan, on command, led five hundred elite soldiers disguised as merchants, traveling in five separate ships with weapons concealed inside, and forged a state document in case of inspection. He took the water route to Jing Province, moored the ships by the river, and personally entered the city to present a secret letter to Lady Sun. The letter falsely claimed that the Dowager Lady of the State was gravely ill and urgently wished to see her daughter. Lady Sun was alarmed at the news and wished to return to Eastern Wu to visit her mother. In this process Zhou Shan displayed his quick wit and decisiveness. When Lady Sun said she needed to inform the Military Adviser, Zhou Shan cleverly retorted, "If the Military Adviser replies, 'You must report to the Imperial Uncle and wait for his answer before boarding the ship,' then what is to be done?"—prompting Lady Sun to give up waiting. He further urged Lady Sun, "Right now, please, my lady, board the carriage and leave the city," telling her that ships were already prepared on the great river, and successfully prompting Lady Sun to take the seven-year-old Adou and more than thirty attendants and hurriedly leave the city to board the ship c:4960.

However, Zhou Shan's plan did not go entirely smoothly. Just as he was about to set sail, Zhao Yun arrived in time and loudly ordered him to halt. Facing Zhao Yun's obstruction, Zhou Shan showed no fear, gripped his long halberd, and shouted, "Who are you, that you dare obstruct the mistress!"—and ordered his soldiers to set sail all together, brandishing their weapons in an attempt to force their way off. Although the wind was favorable and the current swift, and the ship drifted away with the flow, Zhao Yun's appearance foreshadowed that Zhou Shan's mission would face even greater challenges c:9188. Zhou Shan's image in the novel is that of a loyal, brave executor possessed of a certain cunning, whose main duty was to serve the political schemes of Sun Quan's faction.

Key Relationships

* Sun Quan (serves): Zhou Shan was a trusted general of Sun Quan, deeply trusted by him. After Zhang Zhao offered his scheme, Sun Quan immediately thought of Zhou Shan, calling him "the most courageous; from his youth he came and went freely through the inner chambers and often accompanied my elder brother," showing how close his relationship with the Sun family was, and that he was regarded as the ideal candidate to carry out a secret mission c:977.
* Sun Quan's Faction (serves): As Sun Quan's trusted man, Zhou Shan's actions directly served the overall strategic goal of Sun Quan's faction—namely, to coerce Liu Bei into returning Jing Province by abducting Adou. The mission he carried out was part of a scheme carefully devised by the faction's leadership (Sun Quan and Zhang Zhao) c:977.
* Lady Sun (escorting/exploiting): Zhou Shan's mission was to exploit Lady Sun's weakness—her longing for her mother—to bring her, together with Adou, back to Eastern Wu. He successfully prompted Lady Sun to board the ship in haste, a key link in this scheme c:4960.
* Zhao Yun (opposing): In the final stage of carrying out his mission, Zhou Shan encountered Zhao Yun's interception. The two confronted each other by the river, Zhou Shan attempting to force his way off by ship while Zhao Yun did all he could to stop him c:9188.

Iconic Scenes

* Secretly infiltrating Jing Province to lure Lady Sun into taking Adou back to Wu: This is Zhou Shan's most central scene in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. On Sun Quan's command, he disguised himself, secretly infiltrated Jing Province, and, on the pretext that the Dowager Lady of the State was gravely ill, successfully persuaded Lady Sun to take Adou and return to Eastern Wu with her. This scene fully displays Zhou Shan's courage, quick wit, and executive ability, and is the concentrated embodiment of his character c:4960.
* Confronting Zhao Yun by the river and forcing the ship off: On the verge of success, Zhou Shan encountered Zhao Yun's pursuit and obstruction by the river. Facing Zhao Yun's order to halt, Zhou Shan, gripping his long halberd, did not flinch and ordered his soldiers to brandish their weapons and force the ship off. This scene highlights Zhou Shan's loyalty, bravery, and resolve; although in the end he did not fully succeed, his bold action left a deep impression on readers c:9188.
