Zhang Gong was a registrar in Dunhuang under Cao Wei. When the region west of the Yellow River was in turmoil, the commandery’s people chose him to serve as acting chief clerk. He does not appear in the Romance.

Deeds

When the region west of the Yellow River was in turmoil, the Dunhuang administrator Ma Ai died in office, and the administrative office had no assistant. Zhang Gong, serving as registrar, acted as chief clerk and earned considerable trust and respect. He also sent his son, Zhang Jiu, east to request an administrator. (Recorded in the historical sources)

After Zhang Jiu was seized by Huang Hua in Jiuquan, Zhang Gong sent his younger cousin Zhang Hua to attack the two counties of Shatou and Ganqi in Jiuquan, while he himself raised troops to support the operation. (Recorded in the historical sources)

He also dispatched two hundred armored cavalry to escort the officials. They traveled east along Jiuquan’s northern frontier and, via the northern river of Zhangye, escorted the administrator, Yin Feng. Wary of Zhang Gong’s forces, Huang Hua surrendered to Su Ze; Zhang Jiu remained safe, and Yin Feng was able to take up his post. (Recorded in the historical sources)
