Historical Record
According to the surviving biographical materials, Dong Chao is not clearly recorded in the official histories. No account of his life or deeds, nor any description of him, appears in the *Records of the Three Kingdoms* or other histories. From the standpoint of historical sources, therefore, Dong Chao is not a genuine historical figure; his image is entirely a product of literary creation.
In the Novel
In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, Dong Chao appears—for the first and only time—as a subordinate of Pang De, in chapter 74, "Pang Lingming Carries His Coffin into a Death Struggle; Lord Guan Floods the Seven Armies". Together with Dong Heng, he was a general under Pang De. At the desperate moment when Guan Yu flooded the Seven Armies, Pang De's force was hemmed in by the floodwaters, with more than half the soldiers lost and no way out on any side. Seeing the cause was lost, Dong Chao and Dong Heng advised Pang De to surrender. Pang De, however, was unswervingly loyal to King Cao Cao of Wei and sworn to die rather than yield; he was utterly enraged by their proposal to surrender. To overawe the troops, Pang De personally beheaded Dong Heng and Dong Chao before the ranks, sternly warning the other officers and men that anyone who again spoke of surrender would meet the same fate. Dong Chao's fate is thus shaped in *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* into that of a tragic figure killed for urging his commander to surrender, his death setting off Pang De's loyalty and resolve.
Key Relationships
Dong Chao's only key relationship in *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* is with Pang De. As Pang De's subordinate, he was besieged together with Pang De at the Battle of Fancheng. However, because of his urging to surrender, he was in the end personally beheaded by Pang De. This relationship forms a stark contrast between Pang De's loyalty and Dong Chao's "clinging to life," and directly brought about Dong Chao's death (novel only).
Iconic Scenes
Dong Chao's signature scene—also the only scene in which he appears in *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*—is the episode at the Battle of Fancheng in which, together with Dong Heng, he proposed surrender to Pang De and was therefore beheaded by him. At the time, Guan Yu had flooded the Seven Armies, and Pang De's force was trapped on a dike, with heavy casualties and sinking morale. Seeing the dire situation, Dong Chao and Dong Heng believed surrender to be the only way out. Their urging to surrender enraged Pang De, who was sworn to die rather than yield; in the end, to spur morale and declare his resolve, Pang De personally beheaded the two. This scene not only shows Dong Chao's end but more profoundly portrays Pang De's loyal valor, becoming a classic moment of solemn pathos in *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* (novel only).
