Historical Record

Historical sources on Dong Heng are lacking; his life and deeds are not clearly mentioned in the official histories. It is therefore impossible to establish from biographical materials his identity, official posts, allegiance, or role in any historical event.

In the Novel

In Luo Guanzhong's *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, Dong Heng appears as a Wei general, his deeds centered on the Battle of Fancheng. Together with Dong Chao, he served as a commanding officer under Yu Jin, accompanying the Seven Armies to relieve Fancheng c:13370. However, Dong Heng objected to King Cao Cao's appointment of Pang De as vanguard. He advised Yu Jin, pointing out that Pang De had formerly been a subordinate of Ma Chao, and that Ma Chao's old lord Liu Bei (one of Shu Han's Five Tiger Generals) and Pang De's elder brother Pang Rou (who held office in Xichuan) were both in the Shu Han camp; he therefore considered Pang De's loyalty doubtful, fearing the move was tantamount to "pouring oil to put out a fire," and suggested Yu Jin report to Cao Cao and choose another man c:13370.

Dong Heng's doubts reflected the suspicion within the Wei army toward Pang De's background, and indirectly set off the steadfast loyalty Pang De displayed in the face of distrust. In the ensuing campaign, when Guan Yu flooded the Seven Armies and the Wei army was driven to desperation, Dong Heng and Dong Chao, seeing the cause was lost, urged Pang De to surrender. Pang De, however, flew into a rage, declaring that he had received deep favor from the King of Wei and could never bow to another; he personally beheaded Dong Heng and Dong Chao to show his resolve to die rather than surrender, and to warn the other soldiers who intended to capitulate c:3184. Dong Heng's death became a footnote to Pang De's image of loyal valor, and hastened the Wei army's collapse in the Flooding of the Seven Armies.

Key Relationships

* Pang De: In the novel Dong Heng was Pang De's colleague but harbored doubts about his loyalty. In the end, he was personally beheaded by Pang De for urging surrender c:3184. (Novel-only)
* Yu Jin: Dong Heng was one of the commanding officers under Yu Jin, and questioned Pang De's appointment as vanguard before Yu Jin c:13370. (Novel-only)
* Dong Chao: Dong Heng's colleague; the two served together as commanding officers, together urged Pang De to surrender in their extremity, and were beheaded together by Pang De c:3184. (Novel-only)

Iconic Scenes

* Questioning Pang De's loyalty: On the eve of the Battle of Fancheng, Dong Heng advised Yu Jin, questioning the suitability of Pang De as vanguard, arguing that since Pang De's old lord and elder brother were both in Shu Han, his loyalty might be unstable, and that the move was like "pouring oil to put out a fire" c:13370. This scene showed Dong Heng's concern over the campaign and foreshadowed Pang De's later display of loyal valor. (Novel-only)
* Beheaded for urging surrender: When Guan Yu flooded the Seven Armies and the Wei army was routed, Dong Heng and Dong Chao, seeing the peril, urged Pang De to surrender. Pang De, enraged and unwilling to bow having received deep favor from the King of Wei, personally beheaded Dong Heng and Dong Chao to declare his resolve and overawe the troops c:3184. This scene is Dong Heng's final end in the novel and his most vivid moment, directly contributing to the portrayal of Pang De's loyal, dauntless valor. (Novel-only)
