Historical Record

Fan Neng appears in the sources mainly in the capacity of a general under Liu Yao. According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, after Liu Yao fled the turmoil to Huaipu, he was appointed by edict as Inspector of Yang Province. However, because Yuan Shu at the time held sway over Huainan, Liu Yao was wary of him and could not go directly to Yang Province to take up his post. He chose to cross south of the Yangtze, and was received at Qu'e by Wu Jing and Sun Ben.

Yuan Shu intended to usurp the throne and proclaim himself emperor, and began to seize and annex the various commanderies and counties. Facing Yuan Shu's threat, Liu Yao dispatched Fan Neng and Zhang Ying to garrison the riverbank to resist Yuan Shu's attack. Because Wu Jing and Sun Ben were generals appointed and employed by Yuan Shu, Liu Yao forced them to leave. Yuan Shu then set himself up as Inspector of Yang Province and, together with Wu Jing and Sun Ben, joined forces to attack Fan Neng and Zhang Ying. The two sides were locked in stalemate for more than a year, and the defensive line of Fan Neng and Zhang Ying was not broken.

To support Liu Yao, the Han court further enfeoffed him as Governor and granted him the title of General Who Rouses Martial Might, with several tens of thousands of troops under his command. However, the situation reversed after Sun Ce crossed eastward. After Sun Ce crossed the river, he defeated the forces of Fan Neng, Zhang Ying, and the rest. The riverbank line that Fan Neng guarded was breached, and Liu Yao was therefore forced to abandon Qu'e and flee to Dantu.

Liu Yao then went up the river to seek refuge in Yuzhang Commandery, encamping at Pengze. Fan Neng's fate is not clearly recorded in the sources, but it may be inferred that after Sun Ce defeated his force, he may have retreated together with Liu Yao, or become scattered or killed in the fighting. As the commander of Liu Yao's important riverbank defensive line against Yuan Shu and Sun Ce, Fan Neng's military role occupied a key position in the warfare of that time.

In the Novel

Romance of the Three Kingdoms gives no independent, detailed depiction of Fan Neng; his role and deeds largely accord with the historical record, appearing mainly as a general under Liu Yao who jointly resisted the attacks of Yuan Shu and Sun Ce. The novel adds no literary embellishment or invention to Fan Neng's personal character, background, or specific exploits, so his image in the novel does not deviate significantly from the historical record, nor does it contain any unique episode without basis in the histories.
