Historical Record
As for records of Sun Qian in the histories, no clear mention of him is found in the verifiable official histories at present. This means that in works such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms there is no detailed account of Sun Qian's life, deeds, or office. It is therefore impossible to construct his historical image from the historical material.
In the Novel
In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Sun Qian appears as a junior general, his appearance closely tied to Sima Yi's launching of the Incident at the Gaoping Tombs. He is depicted as one of the guard forces at the residence of Cao Shuang, and played a key role in dissuasion as Sima Yi led troops past Cao Shuang's residence. Chapter 107 of the novel describes this scene in detail: as Sima Yi led his troops past the gate of Cao Shuang's house, Cao Shuang's wife, Lady Liu, in alarm asked the residence's warden Pan Ju what Sima Yi's purpose was. Pan Ju thereupon led crossbowmen up onto the gate-tower, intending to halt Sima Yi's column. Just as Pan Ju was about to loose his arrows, the junior general Sun Qian appeared in time and thrice dissuaded Pan Ju, saying, "The Grand Tutor acts for the great affairs of the state—do not loose arrows". His dissuasion finally made Pan Ju stop shooting, allowing Sima Yi to pass through smoothly. This episode is Sun Qian's only appearance in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and his entire body of dialogue. His action to some degree averted a premature head-on clash between Sima Yi and Cao Shuang's faction, and provided convenience for Sima Yi's coup. The novel's portrayal of Sun Qian highlights his judgment at a critical moment and his consideration for "the great affairs of the state," though his motives and stance are not deeply examined. As history makes no clear mention of Sun Qian, his image in the novel is entirely a literary creation.
Key Relationships
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Sun Qian's key relationship is shown mainly in his interaction with Pan Ju. Pan Ju was the gate-warden general of Cao Shuang's residence, who during Sima Yi's coup tried to halt Sima Yi's column by force. Sun Qian, as Pan Ju's colleague or subordinate, at this urgent juncture successfully stopped Pan Ju's action with his words. This relationship displays Sun Qian's influence over Pan Ju's actions in a particular situation, and indirectly affected the course of Sima Yi's coup. Moreover, though without direct dialogue, Sun Qian's action also indirectly affected Sima Yi and his son Sima Zhao, since his dissuasion allowed Sima Yi's column to pass smoothly by Cao Shuang's residence and avoided needless conflict, thereby safeguarding the smooth execution of Sima Yi's coup plan (novel only).
Iconic Scenes
Sun Qian's iconic scene is unquestionably the episode in Chapter 107 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms in which he dissuades Pan Ju from loosing arrows at Sima Yi's column. In this scene, as Sima Yi led his troops past Cao Shuang's residence and Pan Ju sought to bar them with a hail of arrows, Sun Qian thrice spoke to stop him, stressing "The Grand Tutor acts for the great affairs of the state—do not loose arrows," and in the end made Pan Ju abandon the attempt to shoot. This scene is Sun Qian's only appearance in the novel and his only line of dialogue, yet it played an unexpected role at the critical moment of Sima Yi's coup. His appearance and words averted a conflict that might have erupted before Cao Shuang's residence, creating the conditions for Sima Yi's smooth advance. This scene not only displays Sun Qian's judgment but also suggests that in complex political struggles, even a single remark by a minor figure may exert a subtle influence on the course of history (novel only).
