Historical Record

According to the surviving biographical materials, the record of Jiang Yiqu is blank. The *Records of the Three Kingdoms* and other official histories do not mention him, and there is no account of his life, deeds, or office. Jiang Yiqu is therefore not a genuine historical figure; his existence is entirely a product of literary creation.

In the Novel

Jiang Yiqu appears in Luo Guanzhong's *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* as a member of Yuan Shao's Faction, his appearance centering on Yuan Shao's rout after the Battle of Guandu. In chapter 31 of the novel, Jiang Yiqu first appears and plays a key role c:6165. At that time, Cao Cao was pressing his advantage in pursuit, and Yuan Shao, in the plight of a collapsing army, fled in disarray with only some eight hundred riders to the north bank of Liyang. It was just then that the general Jiang Yiqu came out of his camp to welcome Yuan Shao. Yuan Shao recounted to Jiang Yiqu the wretched state of his defeat, and Jiang Yiqu displayed his ability to win hearts, actively summoning and reassuring the scattered soldiers. Owing to Yuan Shao's appearance and Jiang Yiqu's efforts, the once-scattered Yuan army miraculously regrouped, its momentum revived, and they even discussed returning to Jizhou c:6165. This episode not only highlights Jiang Yiqu's standing and influence within Yuan Shao's Faction but also indirectly reflects that, though gravely defeated, Yuan Shao still retained some power to rally men. In the novel, Jiang Yiqu's appearance gave Yuan Shao a chance to catch his breath and regroup, though this revival was only temporary and ultimately could not change the fate of Yuan Shao's Faction. Jiang Yiqu's image in the novel is that of a general loyal to Yuan Shao who could step forward in time of crisis to steady the troops; though his part is small, he provided crucial support at Yuan Shao's most desperate hour.

Key Relationships

* Yuan Shao's Faction: Jiang Yiqu was a member of Yuan Shao's Faction. After Yuan Shao's defeat at Guandu, he came out of his camp to welcome Yuan Shao and helped him recruit the scattered troops, briefly reviving Yuan Shao's momentum c:6165 (novel only). This shows that he held a certain standing and influence within Yuan Shao's Faction, able to swiftly regather forces after a great defeat. His relationship with Yuan Shao was that of subordinate to lord, and at Yuan Shao's most critical moment he displayed loyalty and support.

Iconic Scenes

* Welcoming Yuan Shao on the north bank of Liyang and summoning the scattered troops: This is Jiang Yiqu's only and most signature appearance in *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. After the Battle of Guandu, Yuan Shao's army collapsed and he fled with only some eight hundred riders to the north bank of Liyang. It was Jiang Yiqu who came out of camp to welcome Yuan Shao and helped him recruit the routed soldiers, so that Yuan Shao's army could regather and its momentum revive c:6165. This scene not only shows Jiang Yiqu's loyalty and ability as Yuan Shao's general but also gave Yuan Shao a sliver of hope in his extremity, though that hope was fleeting. This scene vividly depicts the chaos and struggle of Yuan Shao's Faction after the Battle of Guandu, and the role Jiang Yiqu played in steadying the troops within it (novel only).
