Historical Record
Hu Zhen, courtesy name Wencai, has no record of his life and deeds in the official histories. During the Three Kingdoms period, especially during the era of Dong Zhuo's domination, several figures named "Hu Zhen" appeared, but none bore the courtesy name "Wencai," and their deeds are mostly unclear. There is therefore at present no firmly attested documentary support for a historical record of Hu Zhen (courtesy name Wencai). Whether he truly existed, or his specific birth and death dates, native place, official ranks, and the like, cannot be verified. This makes Hu Zhen (courtesy name Wencai) an almost blank figure in historical research, his image presented mainly through literary works.
In the Novel
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Hu Zhen (courtesy name Wencai) appears as a general under Dong Zhuo, his image centering on the campaign against Dong Zhuo. He first appears in Chapter 5, when Dong Zhuo dispatches him together with Hua Xiong to Sishui Pass to jointly resist the campaign of the eighteen allied lords. In the novel, Hu Zhen is portrayed as a valiant fighter who is, however, somewhat reckless. He once went into battle together with Hua Xiong, clashing before Sishui Pass with Cheng Pu, a subordinate general of Sun Jian, and for a time gaining the upper hand. His chief function, however, is to set off the valor of Hua Xiong and the surpassing martial skill of Guan Yu. After Hua Xiong is slain by Guan Yu, Hu Zhen's image quickly fades away, and he has no further significant scenes. The novel's shaping of him is more as a secondary military officer of Dong Zhuo's faction, serving the overall war narrative rather than offering any in-depth portrayal of his personal life. Since his deeds are unrecorded in history, the descriptions in the novel are all literary creation.
Key Relationships
* Dong Zhuo (novel only): In the novel Hu Zhen is a subordinate general of Dong Zhuo, obeying Dong Zhuo's orders and taking part in the campaign to resist the eighteen allied lords. As a member of Dong Zhuo's faction, his actions directly serve Dong Zhuo's military arrangements. This subordinate-lord relationship is the very basis of his existence in the novel.
* Hua Xiong (novel only): Hu Zhen and Hua Xiong fought together at Sishui Pass as comrades-in-arms. The two jointly resisted the allied lords' army, together facing the challenge of Sun Jian and other generals. Hua Xiong's valor to some degree also set off Hu Zhen's presence.
* Sun Jian (novel only): At Sishui Pass, Hu Zhen fought against Sun Jian's subordinate general, an opponent on the battlefield. His clash with Sun Jian and the generals under him formed part of the Battle of Sishuiguan.
Iconic Scenes
* The Battle of Sishuiguan (novel only): Hu Zhen's (courtesy name Wencai) chief appearance is the Battle of Sishuiguan in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. On Dong Zhuo's orders, he garrisoned Sishui Pass together with Hua Xiong to resist the assault of the eighteen allied lords. In this battle he clashed with Sun Jian's subordinate general Cheng Pu, displaying a measure of martial force. However, with Hua Xiong slain by Guan Yu, Hu Zhen's role in the battle came to an end. This scene is the only specifically described military action he has in the novel, and the concentrated expression of his identity as a subordinate of Dong Zhuo. His appearance sets the stage for the subsequent classic episode of Guan Yu slaying Hua Xiong while the wine was still warm; though not the protagonist, his participation makes the depiction of the battle richer. After this, Hu Zhen never again appears in the novel, and his end is left unaccounted for, making the Battle of Sishuiguan his sole iconic moment.
