Historical Record
Wang Men appears in the historical material chiefly in the capacity of a subordinate general of Gongsun Zan, his recorded deeds centering on the episode of his betraying Gongsun Zan and going over to Yuan Shao. According to the *Records of the Three Kingdoms*, Gongsun Zan once appointed Liu Yu as Prefect of Dongzhou, and Wang Men was among Gongsun Zan's subordinate generals. At a certain point, Wang Men betrayed Gongsun Zan and led more than ten thousand men under Yuan Shao to attack Liu Yu. Faced with Wang Men's assault, Liu Yu's subordinates were generally afraid and even harbored thoughts of surrender. Liu Yu, however, mounted the city wall and delivered a verbal rebuke to Wang Men. He pointed out that Wang Men had once received Gongsun Zan's generous treatment, yet now had turned to make rebellion, denouncing him as a "man of disorder." Liu Yu further challenged Wang Men by provocation, declaring that he himself had been charged with holding the city, and that even if he had no more than "the wit of a hanging jug," he needed no outside aid—asking in turn why Wang Men was not hastening to attack the city. On hearing this, Wang Men felt shame and in the end withdrew. Although Liu Yu displayed his resourcefulness, Gongsun Zan was unable to employ him to good effect. After Gongsun Zan's downfall, Xianyu Fu was raised up to act as Grand Administrator, and because he had long been on good terms with Liu Yu, he appointed Liu Yu as his Senior Clerk. In a chaotic age of contending warlords, Xianyu Fu did not know where to turn; Liu Yu pointed out the direction for him, holding that Cao Cao would in the end be able to settle the realm, and urging him to submit to Cao Cao quickly to avoid future trouble. Xianyu Fu adopted Liu Yu's advice and was thereby rewarded and favored. Cao Cao subsequently recruited Liu Yu as a Military Planning Officer of the Chancellor, and successively appointed him magistrate of Yingyin and of Langling counties, then promoted him to Grand Administrator of Yiyang, achieving administrative results wherever he went. As for Wang Men's deeds thereafter, the histories record nothing further.
In the Novel
*Romance of the Three Kingdoms* does not give Wang Men any independent literary portrayal. Within the novel's narrative framework, Wang Men's role and deeds are not mentioned; thus any plot, characterization, or fate concerning Wang Men is absent from the novel. This means the novel did not take up the historical episode of Wang Men's betraying Gongsun Zan and attacking Liu Yu, nor did it adapt or supplement it in any form. Wang Men is therefore a completely blank figure in the novel, with no distinctive "novel" image of his own.
Key Relationships
* Gongsun Zan: Wang Men was once a subordinate general of Gongsun Zan and received his generous treatment. In the end, however, he betrayed Gongsun Zan and went over to Yuan Shao's camp, leading troops to attack Gongsun Zan's subordinate Liu Yu. This "defected_from" relationship is Wang Men's most central marker of identity in the historical record.
* Yuan Shao: After betraying Gongsun Zan, Wang Men became a subordinate general of Yuan Shao and led more than ten thousand men to attack Liu Yu on Yuan Shao's behalf. Yuan Shao was Wang Men's new lord after he betrayed Gongsun Zan, and the backer behind his military action.
* Liu Yu: As the Prefect of Dongzhou appointed by Gongsun Zan, Liu Yu was the direct target of Wang Men's assault after his betrayal. Liu Yu's verbal rebuke from atop the city wall directly led to Wang Men's shamed withdrawal, displaying the antagonism between the two.
Iconic Scenes
* Betraying Gongsun Zan and attacking Liu Yu: Wang Men's most iconic scene is none other than his betraying his former lord Gongsun Zan, going over to Yuan Shao, and leading more than ten thousand men to attack the city held by Gongsun Zan's subordinate Liu Yu. This event not only reveals Wang Men's shift in political allegiance but also directly gives rise to his verbal clash with Liu Yu. It is the only military action of Wang Men recorded in detail in the histories, and the key proof of his existence as a figure.
* Humiliated beneath the city, withdrawing in shame: While attacking Liu Yu, Wang Men, faced with Liu Yu's rebuke from atop the wall and his provocation, in the end felt shame and withdrew. This scene vividly displays Wang Men's psychological response when faced with stratagem and verbal assault, and indirectly highlights Liu Yu's wisdom and courage. It is the most concrete and dramatic moment of Wang Men in the historical record, and an indispensable part of his characterization.
