Deeds
- After the Duke of Gaogui finished lecturing on the Book of Changes, he ordered a lecture on the Book of Documents. Yu Jun gave two interpretations of “examining antiquity and being equal to Heaven,” and, judging by what the Great Plan says, considered Wang Su’s interpretation the more persuasive. When the emperor challenged him, he said he was following his teacher’s explanation and had not grasped the deeper meaning. (Recorded in historical sources)
- Discussing Yao’s appointment of Gun and whether sages could make mistakes, Yu Jun cited Yao’s failure regarding the Four Fiends, the Duke of Zhou’s regarding the two uncles, and Confucius’s regarding Zai Yu. He then said these were questions that had puzzled the sages of old and were beyond his ability to investigate fully. (Recorded in historical sources)
- Asked why Shun had not been appointed earlier, Yu Jun replied that Yao sought worthy men and intended to yield the throne, and that Shun’s recommendation had originally come from Yao. When the emperor countered, Yu Jun said the matter was beyond his understanding. (Recorded in historical sources)
