Sun Ben was the son of Sun Jian’s elder brother and a general on the Sun family’s side. He does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms; the source material does not specify the chapters in which he appears.
Deeds
After Sun Jian raised an army, Sun Ben gave up his official post and followed him on campaign. After Sun Jian’s death, Sun Ben led the surviving troops and escorted his coffin.
Sun Ben later attached himself to Yuan Shu, defeated Zhou Ang, and was recommended for appointment as Inspector of Yu Province. He later served as Commandant of Danyang and Acting General Who Conquers the Caitiffs, putting down the Shanyue.
After Liu Yao drove Sun Ben out, Sun Ben led his troops in retreat to Liyang. Yuan Shu then ordered him and Wu Jing to attack Fan Neng and Zhang Ying; after Sun Ce crossed the river, he helped the two men defeat their opponents.
When Yuan Shu proclaimed himself emperor and appointed Sun Ben Administrator of Jiujiang, Sun Ben refused the appointment, leaving behind his wife and children and returning south of the Yangtze.
Sun Ben campaigned with Sun Ce against Liu Xun and Huang Zu. After Liu Yao died of illness, Sun Ce recommended Sun Ben to serve as Administrator of Yuzhang. In the thirteenth year of Jian’an, an imperial envoy arrived with an edict appointing him General Who Conquers the Caitiffs, while he continued to administer his original commandery. He died after serving in office for eleven years.
