Historical Record

Regarding Bao Zhong (courtesy name Shuyi), there is no clear mention in the official histories such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms. His life, deeds, family background, and specific historical activities are therefore impossible to verify. This suggests that Bao Zhong, as a figure, may not have existed in the true historical record, or that his influence was negligible and went unnoticed and unrecorded by the historians.

In the Novel

In Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Bao Zhong (courtesy name Shuyi) appears as the younger brother of Bao Xin, the Chancellor of Jibei, and his image and fate are given a strong literary coloring. Bao Zhong first appears in Chapter 5 of the novel c:4398, at the time when the eighteen warlords formed a coalition to campaign against Dong Zhuo. At that point, the coalition leader Yuan Shao had decided that Sun Jian would serve as vanguard and advance directly to challenge Sishui Pass. However, Bao Xin, the Chancellor of Jibei, feared that Sun Jian would seize the foremost credit, and so secretly dispatched his younger brother Bao Zhong, leading three thousand horse and foot, to take a shortcut and reach the foot of Sishui Pass first to give battle c:4398.

Bao Zhong's move was clearly meant to snatch the credit, but his military talent and strategic vision fell far short of Sun Jian's. He recklessly gave challenge, only to encounter Hua Xiong, the fierce and skilled warrior under Dong Zhuo. Hua Xiong led five hundred armored cavalry charging down from the pass, shouting loudly, "Rebel general, do not flee!" Bao Zhong, caught off guard, urgently tried to retreat, but Hua Xiong's blade fell and he was cut down from his horse in an instant c:4398. Hua Xiong not only slew Bao Zhong but also captured alive many of Bao Zhong's officers, and sent men to deliver Bao Zhong's head to the chancellor's residence to report the victory; Dong Zhuo therefore promoted Hua Xiong to Commander c:4398.

Bao Zhong's appearance and swift defeat in Romance of the Three Kingdoms serve the author's purpose of setting off Hua Xiong's ferocity and laying the groundwork for the later episode of Guan Yu slaying Hua Xiong while the wine was still warm. His image is that of a general eager for quick gains, brave but without strategy, and his tragic end also serves as a warning that in a chaotic age, relying on mere brute courage without wisdom and strategy makes it hard to survive. Bao Zhong's death also indirectly prompted the coalition warlords to reassess the strength of Dong Zhuo's army, and foreshadowed the subsequent course of the campaign. Since there is no historical record of him, Bao Zhong is entirely a literary creation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, existing mainly to advance the plot and shape other characters.

Key Relationships

* Bao Xin (sibling_of): In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Bao Zhong is the younger brother of Bao Xin, the Chancellor of Jibei c:4398. Because Bao Xin feared Sun Jian would seize the foremost credit, he secretly dispatched Bao Zhong to lead troops and challenge the enemy first, a decision that directly led to Bao Zhong's crushing defeat and death. This decision of Bao Xin's reflects the complex relationships among the warlords—sharing a common goal yet harboring private ambitions—and also indirectly shaped Bao Zhong's tragic fate (novel only).

Iconic Scenes

* Slain by Hua Xiong at the foot of Sishui Pass: Bao Zhong's most iconic scene is at the foot of Sishui Pass, where, eager to seize credit, he recklessly gave challenge and was cut down from his horse by Hua Xiong, a great general under Dong Zhuo c:4398. This scene not only displays Hua Xiong's ferocity but also highlights Bao Zhong's rashness and lack of strategy, becoming an important episode in the early stage of the eighteen warlords' campaign against Dong Zhuo in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and laying the groundwork for the classic later episode of Guan Yu slaying Hua Xiong while the wine was still warm (novel only).
