Historical Record

Historical records concerning Zheng Bao are exceedingly scarce; indeed, the *Records of the Three Kingdoms* and other official histories make no direct mention of a person named "Zheng Bao" c:1. This indicates that, if Zheng Bao did exist, his life and deeds did not rise to the level of being recorded in detail by the official histories, or his sphere of activity and influence were relatively limited and never entered the view of the mainstream historical narrative. We therefore cannot sketch from the historical record any concrete image of Zheng Bao, his deeds, or his role in historical events c:1. This leaves any historical discussion of Zheng Bao facing a dearth of materials, and likewise leaves vast room for the imagination of later literary creation.

In the Novel

In the literary masterpiece *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, there is likewise no clear depiction of Zheng Bao c:1. This means that whether as a major character, a minor character, or even a background figure, Zheng Bao occupies no place in the novel's narrative. Unlike the many figures who are barely recorded in the official histories yet are given rich portrayals in the novel, Zheng Bao remains "invisible" in the novel as well c:1. This phenomenon may stem from various causes—for instance, the author Luo Guanzhong may not have encountered any folk legend or unofficial account concerning Zheng Bao while writing, or may have judged Zheng Bao's story insufficient to enrich the novel's plot. Thus the Zheng Bao of the novel, like his counterpart in the histories, is a blank figure, with everything left for later generations to fill in or imagine.

Key Relationships

Because neither the historical materials nor the materials of the novel mention Zheng Bao, no key relationship can be established between Zheng Bao and any historical or fictional figure c:1. This means we cannot place Zheng Bao within any known historical event or literary plot, nor can we discuss his interactions with contemporaries. He is neither a ruler's strategist, nor a general of some army, nor a member of some clan. This state of "no relationships" makes Zheng Bao an existence entirely independent of known historical and literary narrative. Any conjecture about Zheng Bao's interpersonal relationships would be pure fiction, lacking any historical or literary basis c:1.

Iconic Scene

Likewise, because there is no record of Zheng Bao in either the histories or the novel, there exists no event that could be called an "iconic scene" c:1. He took part in no famous battle, delivered no important speech, and left no memorable action. His life, in the existing historical and literary records, is a blank. This stands in stark contrast to those figures who left a bold mark in the long river of history, and it makes Zheng Bao an extremely mysterious figure. His "iconic scene" perhaps exists only in the minds of readers curious about historical blanks, to be constructed through imagination c:1.
