Historical Record

Gongsun Yue's life and deeds are known mainly from the *Records of the Three Kingdoms*. As a younger cousin of Gongsun Zan, in the era of contending warlords at the end of the Han he was once dispatched by Gongsun Zan to carry out an important mission. At that time, Dong Zhuo had abducted Emperor Xian and moved the capital west to Chang'an, and righteous armies rose east of the passes; Yuan Shao, Han Fu, and others intended to enthrone the Governor of You Province, Liu Yu, as emperor in order to oppose Dong Zhuo. Liu Yu resolutely refused, but Yuan Shao and the others still urged him to take charge of the affairs of the Imperial Secretariat and to grant appointments by imperial sanction; Liu Yu would not consent to this either, yet still kept in contact with Yuan Shao and the rest.

During this period, Emperor Xian longed to return east, and dispatched the Palace Attendant Liu He (Liu Yu's son), disguised, to flee from Dong Zhuo, slip out through Wuguan, and make for You Province, intending to have Liu Yu send troops to come and escort him. Passing through Yuan Shu's territory on the way, Liu He explained to him the Son of Heaven's intent. Coveting Liu Yu's relief forces, Yuan Shu detained Liu He and would not release him, promising to march west together once the troops had gathered, while also having Liu He write to Liu Yu. Upon receiving Liu He's letter, Liu Yu prepared to dispatch several thousand cavalry to join up with Liu He.

However, Gongsun Zan, already aware that Yuan Shu harbored treacherous designs, did not wish Liu Yu to dispatch troops, and so dissuaded him. But Liu Yu would not listen. Fearing that Yuan Shu would bear a grudge if he learned of this, Gongsun Zan therefore also dispatched his own younger cousin Gongsun Yue to lead a thousand cavalry to Yuan Shu, as a show of friendship. Yet Gongsun Zan secretly instigated Yuan Shu to detain Liu He and seize his troops. This series of events caused the rift between Liu Yu and Gongsun Zan to deepen by the day. The historical record of Gongsun Yue ends here, and does not mention his later fate.

In the Novel

In *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, Gongsun Yue's image and fate differ from the historical record, his appearance centering mainly on the conflict between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao. In the novel, Gongsun Yue is Gongsun Zan's younger brother, not his younger cousin. He first appears in Chapter 7, when Gongsun Zan, learning that Yuan Shao had occupied Jizhou, dispatched Gongsun Yue to Yuan Shao to demand that Yuan Shao partition the territory of Jizhou.

Yuan Shao told Gongsun Yue that he wished Gongsun Zan to come in person to discuss the matter. After taking his leave of Yuan Shao, Gongsun Yue was ambushed on his return journey. Before he had gone fifty li, a body of cavalry suddenly burst out from the roadside, claiming to be retainers of Chancellor Dong, and shot Gongsun Yue dead with a hail of arrows. Gongsun Yue's followers fled back and reported his death to Gongsun Zan. On hearing the news, Gongsun Zan flew into a rage, holding that Yuan Shao had first lured him into attacking Han Fu, then seized the chance to take Jizhou, and now, under the false name of Dong Zhuo, had shot his brother to death; such a feud, left unavenged, would unbefit a gentleman. And so Gongsun Zan mustered all his own troops and stormed toward Jizhou, joining a great battle with Yuan Shao upon the Panhe.

Through Gongsun Yue's death, *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* directly detonates the full-scale conflict between Gongsun Zan and Yuan Shao, casting him as an important sacrifice that drives the plot forward. This diverges greatly from the historical record, in which Gongsun Yue was dispatched by Gongsun Zan to Yuan Shu to forge friendship while secretly instigating Yuan Shu to detain Liu He; the historical sources do not mention the manner of Gongsun Yue's death or any link to direct conflict with Yuan Shao. By this revision, the novel makes the web of character relationships more dramatic and the conflict more explosive.
