Historical Record

Sima Zhou, styled Zijiang, left very little record in the official histories. Based on existing materials, there is no detailed biography or dedicated account chronicling his achievements and life. This leaves us without direct, abundant source support when trying to establish his true historical face. In official compilations such as the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Sima Zhou's name may appear only incidentally when other important figures or events are mentioned, passed over in a single stroke as a peripheral figure. As a result, there is almost no clear record of Sima Zhou's specific offices, political activities, military achievements, or personal character. This stands in sharp contrast to the many figures who left vivid marks on the Three Kingdoms era, and it makes Sima Zhou especially mysterious and elusive in historical study.

In the Novel

As an episodic novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms often took historical prototypes and reworked them artistically, even inventing wholly new episodes and characters. Surprisingly, however, Sima Zhou is likewise scarcely mentioned in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. According to existing materials, Sima Zhou appears in the novel only in Chapter 120, and his appearances are so few as to be all but negligible. This means that even in the literary work, Sima Zhou received no notable treatment; his image in the novel is blurred, given no distinctive traits or significant role. This handling stands in stark contrast to the novel's lavish portrayal of other Sima-clan members such as Sima Yi, Sima Shi, and Sima Zhao, further underscoring Sima Zhou's "invisible" status in both literature and history. The novel offers no detailed depiction of Sima Zhou's life and weaves no engaging storyline for him—wholly unlike the many historical figures it "brings to life."

Key Relationships

Because both the historical record and the novel say so little about Sima Zhou, it is difficult to establish any clear "key relationships" for him. In the official histories, as a member of the Sima clan he must necessarily have had blood ties to other Sima kinsmen, but these relationships are not elaborated, nor is any notable political or military interaction with the family's core members recorded. For instance, he may have been a brother, son, or nephew of Sima Yi, but the histories say nothing of the specific kinship or of any dealings between them. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his appearances are so few that he forms no meaningful web of relationships either. He is not portrayed as the ally, rival, or confidant of any important character, and his presence is virtually nil. Thus, from the standpoint of both history and literary portrayal, Sima Zhou lacks enough information to support any analysis of "key relationships."

Iconic Scenes

Given that Sima Zhou lacks detailed record in both the histories and the novel, no "iconic scene" can be established for him. In the official histories there is no record of his taking part in any major battle, political event, or personal decision. His name is linked to no famous historical moment or place. Likewise, although he appears briefly in Chapter 120 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, that appearance is accompanied by no event or dialogue that could be called "iconic." He makes no important pronouncement at a crucial moment, displays no martial prowess or strategy on the battlefield, and plays no part in any political struggle. Thus, in both the historical and literary dimensions, Sima Zhou left no memorable scene; his image remains perpetually blurred, lacking any highlight by which later generations might remember him.
