Lady Hu was the wife of Liu Yan, a Shu Han official, and appears in Chapter 115 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Deeds
Historical records state that Lady Hu was beautiful. In the first month of the twelfth year of Jianxing, she entered the palace to pay her respects to the Empress Dowager, who specifically asked her to stay; she was allowed to leave the palace about a month later. Liu Yan suspected that she was having an affair with the Later Lord. He ordered five hundred soldiers to strike her face with their shoes, then cast her off. Lady Hu reported the matter, and Liu Yan was consequently imprisoned and executed.
In the novel, Lady Hu entered the palace to pay her respects to the empress and was kept there for a month. Liu Yan suspected that she was having an affair with the Later Lord and ordered five hundred soldiers to beat her face with their shoes, nearly killing her. The Later Lord ordered the relevant officials to deliberate on Liu Yan’s crime, and Liu Yan was then beheaded. From then on, the wives of officials were forbidden to attend court.
