Liu Jie was a commandery clerk in Jing Province during the Cao Wei period and belonged to a prominent local clan known for its chivalrous retainers. He does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Deeds

Liu Jie had more than a thousand retainers. When they went out, they turned to banditry; when they returned, they disrupted the administration. Sima Zhi requisitioned Liu Jie’s retainers, including Wang Tong, for military service. Liu Jie hid Wang Tong and the others. Later, after Sima Zhi sent out an urgent proclamation detailing the charges, the commandery governor Hao Guang ordered Liu Jie to serve in Wang Tong and the others’ place. This led people in Qing Province to say that Sima Zhi “used a commandery clerk as a soldier” (as recorded in the histories).
