Historical Record

Dai Yuan, as Assistant Administrator of Danyang Commandery, had a life whose deeds revolve mainly around the murder of Sun Yi and its aftermath. After Sun Yi was killed, Dai Yuan, together with Gui Lan, was drawn into this power struggle. When Sun Yi's elder kinsman Sun He hurried to Wanling and sharply rebuked Gui Lan and Dai Yuan for failing to protect Sun Yi and allowing the treacherous scheme to succeed, Dai Yuan and Gui Lan grew deeply uneasy. They reckoned that if even Sun He, distant in relation to Sun Yi, rebuked them thus, then should Sun Quan (the General Who Conquers Caitiffs) come, their lives would not be spared. So the two conspired to kill Sun He.

After killing Sun He, Dai Yuan and Gui Lan sought external support, sending men north to welcome the Inspector of Yangzhou, Liu Fu, intending to have Liu Fu garrison Liyang while they responded with Danyang Commandery. Their plan, however, did not succeed. Sun Yi's former subordinates, including the staff officers Xu Yuan, Sun Gao, and Fu Ying, deeply detested the conduct of Gui Lan and Dai Yuan. According to the Wu Li, Gui Lan and Dai Yuan were close to Bian Hong and others, and had been repeatedly troubled by Sun Yi, so they often harbored rebellious intent. When Sun Quan went out on campaign, they seized the chance to carry out their treacherous scheme. After Sun Yi was killed, Gui Lan not only occupied the military headquarters but also seized Sun Yi's concubines and attendants, and even attempted to force Sun Yi's wife, Lady Xu, into marriage. To preserve herself, Lady Xu feigned consent, and secretly contacted the former generals Sun Gao, Fu Ying, and others, jointly plotting revenge.

Under Lady Xu's clever arrangement, Sun Gao, Fu Ying, and the others gathered more than twenty of Sun Yi's retainers and swore an oath together. On the day Lady Xu set out sacrifices and put off her mourning garments, Gui Lan, full of eager intent, burst in; Lady Xu seized the moment to give the signal, and Sun Gao and Fu Ying acted at once, together killing Gui Lan. At the same time, the others killed Dai Yuan outside the headquarters. Lady Xu then resumed her mourning garments and offered the heads of Gui Lan and Dai Yuan in sacrifice before Sun Yi's tomb. This astonished the whole army and was regarded as a marvelous deed. Sun Quan arrived afterward, thoroughly rooted out the remaining partisans of Gui Lan and Dai Yuan, promoted Sun Gao and Fu Ying to Gate Generals, and also granted gold and silk to the other participants in reward for their merit. Dai Yuan's end was thus to be killed by Sun Yi's former subordinates in this tangled struggle of revenge and power.

In the Novel

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dai Yuan's image is largely consistent with the historical record, but the plot is depicted more vividly and dramatically, with emphasis on his motive and process of conspiring with Gui Lan to murder Sun Yi. In the novel, Dai Yuan, as Assistant Administrator of Danyang Commandery, together with the Danyang Commandant Gui Lan, harbored resentment because Sun Yi was "harsh in temperament and fond of drink, and after becoming drunk would often flog his soldiers," and they often had the intent to kill Sun Yi. This resentment toward their commander became the direct fuse of their treason. The novel particularly emphasizes that Dai Yuan and Gui Lan "joined with Sun Yi's retainer Bian Hong as their trusted confidant, and together plotted to kill Sun Yi," which makes their conspiracy more premeditated and organized, rather than merely the vague description of "often harboring rebellious intent" in the historical record.

The novel depicts in detail the scene of Sun Yi hosting a banquet for the generals and county magistrates, as well as the warning of Sun Yi's wife, Lady Xu. Lady Xu was skilled in divination; that day she divined an omen of great misfortune and strongly urged Sun Yi not to attend the banquet, but Sun Yi would not heed her. This episode is also mentioned in the historical source, the Wu Li, but the novel, through the setting of Lady Xu as "beautiful and wise" and "highly skilled in the divination of the Yi," heightens the legendary color and sense of fate of the story. At the banquet, Sun Yi, drunk and off his guard, was struck down from behind by Bian Hong and killed. The novel's depiction of Dai Yuan's and Gui Lan's conduct after Sun Yi's murder—such as laying the blame on Bian Hong and seizing Sun Yi's wife and concubines—does not differ in essence from the historical record, but through literary craft these acts are depicted as even more cruel and greedy, further highlighting their villainous image. In the end, Dai Yuan's and Gui Lan's fate—being killed in a scheme devised by Sun Yi's former subordinates and Lady Xu—is also faithfully reproduced in the novel, and given a stronger color of righteous revenge.

Key Relationships

* Sun Yi (betrayed_by): Dai Yuan and Gui Lan, dissatisfied with Sun Yi's harsh temperament and his flogging of soldiers, jointly plotted and ultimately brought about Sun Yi's murder. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this motive of betrayal is further intensified, becoming the core driving force of Dai Yuan's action.
* Sun He (enemy_of): After Sun Yi was murdered, Sun He rebuked Gui Lan and Dai Yuan for failing to protect Sun Yi, and was in turn murdered by Dai Yuan and Gui Lan in conspiracy. This shows Dai Yuan's ruthless means of stopping at nothing to eliminate threats in order to preserve himself.
* Gui Lan (ally_and_co-conspirator): Dai Yuan and Gui Lan were close co-conspirators, acting together throughout—from murdering Sun Yi to killing Sun He, and then to seeking Liu Fu's support. Their fates were also closely bound, and in the end they were killed together by Sun Yi's former subordinates.
* Lady Xu, Sun Gao, Fu Ying (enemy_of): Lady Xu, Sun Gao, Fu Ying, and others were Sun Yi's intimates and former subordinates, who deeply detested the betrayal by Dai Yuan and Gui Lan, and ultimately devised a scheme to kill Dai Yuan and Gui Lan and avenge Sun Yi. This was the key factor in Dai Yuan's eventual destruction.

Signature Scene

* Conspiring to Murder Sun Yi: Dai Yuan and Gui Lan, out of their dissatisfaction with Sun Yi, colluded with Sun Yi's retainer Bian Hong and together plotted and carried out the murder of Sun Yi. This scene is depicted in detail in Romance of the Three Kingdoms and is the beginning of Dai Yuan's crimes.
* Killing Sun He: After Sun Yi's murder, faced with Sun He's rebuke, Dai Yuan and Gui Lan, to preserve themselves, conspired to kill Sun He. This act further exposed their cruelty and their willingness to stop at nothing.
* Being Killed by Sun Yi's Former Subordinates: Under Lady Xu's clever scheme, Sun Yi's former subordinates Sun Gao, Fu Ying, and others, while killing Gui Lan, also killed Dai Yuan. This scene marks Dai Yuan's eventual destruction and is the embodiment of justice being upheld; it is described in detail in both the historical source the Wu Li and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
