Historical Record

Historical material on Wu Kuang is lacking, and his name does not appear in the official histories. It is therefore impossible to verify from historical documents Wu Kuang's life, offices, deeds, or the actual role he played during the Three Kingdoms period.

In the Novel

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wu Kuang appears as a subordinate general of He Jin, his portrayal centering chiefly on the vengeance that followed He Jin's murder. When the Ten Attendants assassinated He Jin, Wu Kuang showed great loyalty and fury. He set fire outside the Qingsuo Gate as a signal for Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, and others to storm into the palace, taking direct part in the purge of the Ten Attendants and their faction. Not only did Wu Kuang bear a deep hatred for the Ten Attendants, he also turned his blade against He Jin's younger brother He Miao. Believing that He Miao had conspired with the Ten Attendants to kill his own brother, when he saw He Miao in the palace he cried out loudly, calling on the crowd to join him in killing He Miao. At Wu Kuang's instigation, He Miao was finally surrounded and "hacked to pieces." Although Wu Kuang appears only once in the novel, his appearance vividly concentrates the fierce power struggle, after He Jin's death, between the gentry forces led by Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu and the eunuch faction, as well as the killings within the gentry that arose from clashing interests. His actions accelerated the escalation of palace turmoil at the end of the Eastern Han and set the stage for Dong Zhuo's entry into the capital. Though he appears only once in the novel, his decisive action and his accusation against He Miao make him an important figure in driving the plot forward, displaying the fierce temperament of a general in a chaotic age and his loyalty (or at least apparent loyalty) to his lord.

Key Relationships

* Ten Attendants (enemy_of): Wu Kuang bore deep hostility toward the Ten Attendants; especially after He Jin was killed, he took direct part in the purge against them, setting fire to assist Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, and others in storming the palace, aiming to slay these "eunuchs who murdered a great minister" who were the chief culprits (novel only).
* He Miao (enemy_of): Wu Kuang regarded He Miao as a traitor who had conspired in the killing of his own brother. In the palace, he openly accused He Miao of colluding with the Ten Attendants and called on the crowd to cut him down, ultimately leading to He Miao being surrounded and killed (novel only).
* He Jin (subordinate_of): Wu Kuang was a subordinate general of He Jin and showed loyalty to him. After He Jin was killed, Wu Kuang immediately took action, embarking on a killing to avenge his lord (novel only).

Signature Scenes

Wu Kuang's signature scene takes place after He Jin had been killed by the Ten Attendants. At the time, Yuan Shao had long awaited He Jin without his arrival, and the Ten Attendants threw He Jin's severed head out the palace gate, declaring that He Jin had been executed for plotting rebellion. At this critical juncture, Wu Kuang, as He Jin's subordinate general, acted decisively. He "set fire outside the Qingsuo Gate" as a signal, igniting a great melee within and beyond the palace. Wu Kuang then fought his way into the inner court and saw He Jin's younger brother He Miao. He cried out loudly: "He Miao conspired to murder his brother—we should all kill him together!" At Wu Kuang's instigation, the crowd responded, surrounding He Miao on all sides and "hacking him to pieces". This series of actions fully displays Wu Kuang's image in Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a loyal subordinate of He Jin, as well as the role of radical avenger he played in that turbulent time, directly bringing about He Miao's death and further intensifying the upheaval in the palace at the end of the Eastern Han (novel only).
