Jiao Ziwen was a soldier in the guard camp of Cao Wei and is mentioned in juan 24 of the Records of the Three Kingdoms; he does not appear in the Romance.
Deeds
Jiao Ziwen once lent money to Dou Li, a fellow soldier in the same camp. Later, when Dou Li went out nearby and did not return, the camp assumed he had fled and made his wife Ying and their children government slaves. (Recorded in the historical sources)
When Gao Rou interrogated Jiao Ziwen, he noticed that Jiao’s expression was unusual. Pressing him about the loan to Dou Li, Gao Rou elicited a confession: Jiao Ziwen had murdered Dou Li and disclosed where he had buried the body. (Recorded in the historical sources)
Officials dug up Dou Li’s body as described in the confession. An imperial decree restored Ying and her children to commoner status and publicized the case throughout the realm as a warning. (Recorded in the historical sources)
