Suli was a Xianbei leader beyond the frontier in Liaoxi, Youbeiping, and Yuyang, and belonged to the Xianbei tribes. He does not appear in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Deeds
During the Jian’an era, Suli sent tribute and opened trade with Cao Cao through Yan Rou. Cao Cao submitted a memorial recommending that he be enfeoffed as a king. At the beginning of the Yan’kang era, Suli sent envoys to present horses, and Emperor Wen enfeoffed him as the King Who Returns to Righteousness. (Recorded in the histories)
Suli once fought with Bimeng. Early in Emperor Wen’s reign, Suli broke the pact among the Xianbei tribes not to sell horses to the Central Plains and sold a thousand horses to the authorities. After Bimeng attacked him, he sought help from Tian Yu. (Recorded in the histories)
To rescue Suli, Tian Yu led troops deep into enemy territory and found a way to break out of the encirclement. Later, Tian Yu also induced men of Suli’s tribe to kill the bandit Gao Ai and send his head to the capital. (Recorded in the histories)
When Qian Zhao served as Colonel Protector of the Xianbei, he won over Suli, Mijia, and more than a hundred thousand households, bringing them into submission and establishing peaceful relations at the frontier. (Recorded in the histories)
In the second year of Taihe, Suli died. His son was still young, so his younger brother Chenglügui took his place as king and governed the tribesmen. (Recorded in the histories)
